Permalink What strings are good for surf AND anything else

New Topic

I've been playing surf for about 2 years now, and I've been using D'Addario Chromes .012 - .052. They've been great for double picking, but playing chords is hell. Recently I've wanted to play some alternative rock and I was wondering if anyone could recommend more multipurpose strings, which were also good for surf. I just restringed my guitar with the fender super bullets it came with and I'm really disappointed with their feel and sound. I'm so used to the flatwounds. Should I just get a lighter gauge of flats like .011 or .010? What do you guys think?

Strings (and guitars, amps and effects) are very subjective things. Everyone likes different stuff. Keeps life interesting.

With that said, I've been using D-Addario Chromes 11's on my Strat, Tele, and Wilson Bros. VM's. I still use the Chromes 12's on the Jazzmasters and Jaguars.

My favorite non-flatwound strings are DR Hi-Beam 11's (EHR-11). The Tite Fit 10's (MH-10) are good if you like 10's, which I don't - but that's just me.

thor:

for flatwound guitar, i use pyramids: but those are sort of co$tly.

for roundwound guitar, i like the rotosounds.

also, GHS boomers are okay for the roundwoud guitar sound.

I found 011 rotosounds (nickel roundwound) are the perfect 'in between' strings on my strat. - tight enough to doublepick, loose enough for bends and easy playing. and good to get an atlantics or jim messina kind of strat sound. after trying it for over a year, I finally decided flats are just a bad match with a strat. mho of course .

I agree with the rotosounds. I got turned onto them by the forum and I love them. the .11s are great. To me they have a softer touch then most strings. And they give you an extra high e string!
