Oh dear lord... Nels Cline!
Nels Cline...with Mike Watt on bass and George Hurley on drums? That might be kindof cool! Maybe add one of the Secondmen on Hammond keyboard?
I'm not a big fan of three pieces. I was thinking more of Nels with Wilco or something like that. Jeff Tweedy is a pretty great guitarist on his own.

Joe Gore and Marc Ribot would be very cool. I'd also like to hear Dave Tronzo surf it up with his slide!

Johnny Ramone playing surf would rock. I love that guy. Actually one of his inspirations was Dick Dale. And no, their version of Surfin' Bird doesn't count as surf for me. Speaking of surf and The Ramones, Mel Bergman along with Davie Allan have this project called the Ramonetures and they play Ramones songs, Ventures style, it's one of the greatest ideas ever, they're great.
Also Joe Strummer and Brian Setzer would kick ass, as well.

Allan Holdsworth. Actually I listen to him a lot before surfing and it gets me pumped.

Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd (they go together). James Burton
Among the dearly departed: Jimmy Bryant, Paul Burlison, Jimmy Rivers.
Good question!

John Cipollina. He had a psychedelic whammy-heavy style that I like for the most part. He even wrote one instrumental called "Cobra" that I don't think sounds entirely un-surfy.
He also had a batshit insane amp setup including a Fender Twin Reverb and Dual Showman. . . and horns for some reason.8O

Leo Kottke, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Roger McGuinn
Those were just off the top of my head.

McGuinn... nice. Stills, Neil Young, would be great in that band as well. Stills and young on dual lead and McGuinn being the glue on rhythm and 12 string.

Damn. I'm late to the party. Jake, you definitely hit mine right on. Nels Cline!!
3 piece all the way. Just let that cat run rampant.
I'm also right there with you on Johnny Marr. That would be my second choice.
And yeah Bill, I'd also love to hear some of my fav jazz players take a shot. Kenny Burrell, Wes (can you imagine heavy reverb'd Wes octaves?), and Pat Martino.

Knopfler is another of my favorites although I've caught crap for liking him on this board. Amazing songwriter great guitarist. He gets lumped in with Clapton, SRV, and that ilk way too often. Knopfler is much more of a Chet Atkins, Hank Marvin type of player.
