I'm a big fan of the early Atlantics but also think they became a great garage band later in the 60s. When I first heard the two songs below in the mid 80s (on the Australian "Ugly Things" comps), I wasn't even aware that the Atlantics had an earlier instrumental period!

Cool! They liked to wear their guitars pretty high, didn't they?

Only once they started singing and trying to sound like the Animals - during their surf years, they wore their guitars where they SHOULD wear their guitars...
Damn British Invasion....

Yeah, it's pretty silly... Trying very hard to get the garage/psychadelia cred. It didn't work, though... I wonder if the 'real' garage/psych guys were thinking, "what a bunch of posers, these "SURF" twangers trying to look and sound hip!" But they were such great musicians, they could probably play ANYTHING and make it sound amazing, as they did with these songs.

Awesome video! I might be wrong, but didn't the Cossacks cover that one?

Yeah, great video! And I think the oscilloscope thing looks cool, especially towards the end. Great camera work on Peter Hood's "drum solo", too. Another thing that looks cool is how Theo Penglis (?) stands on his toes while leaning backwards which also can be seen in this shot:

Klas, do you know the Miners of Muzo? a band from my hometown, active in the 80's and early 90's - they were bigger in the rest of europe then in the netherlands.
they played (and recorded) this song - in retrospect, it must have been my first encounter with 60's garage. I actually never realized it was not one of their own songs untill seeing this clip just now - took me a while to figure out where I'd heard that song before. talk about a mental black spot huh?

I don't think I heard about them but I was only into a handful of the 80s garage revival bands and pretty soon tended to prefer the real deal bands from the 60s.

Wow, I can't believe this is on YouTube! I have this on a rare Aussie video, and it really is simply amazing (even with the oscilloscope, which is a bit annoying since you can't see the action on occasion). My favorite part of the video is seeing how fast Theo is strumming that rhythm guitar. Absolutely nuts. Of course, it's just a 'lip-sync', but you can tell the guys are doing an incredible job keeping up with it, and could have easily played it live. I love it!
Warren, yes, you're right, the Cossacks did cover The Crusher on Tsar Wars - I'm pretty sure Brian knows that, though. I think he was just suggesting for the Madeira to do it, too. However, I gotta say that we have enough songs of that type in our repertoire. I'm actually hoping to pick up "SOS (Stomp On Stomp)" by the Atlantics next. What a cool tune...
BTW, I exchanged an email with Jim Skiathitis last week since I had a couple of questions for him. He told me that the Atlantics were often tuning down half a step, which I suspected for a while (pretty much all of their second album "Now It's Stompin' Time" is about half a step low). Here's what he says about that: "Strangely enough, yes, we used to tune a semitone down to try and get an even lower, gutsier sounding tone on the E & A strings. It was easy to do because at that stage we had no keyboards or used any brass, so there was no problem in dropping the tuning. I think you're the first person that has ever asked about that." Another thing that Hendrix did that the Atlantics beat him to... (I'm sure some blues guys were tuning a half step down before that, but I don't know of any rock&roll guys doing it before that...)
Just in case anybody was wondering....

A great photo! One of my favorites by them. Not that they have very many around...
BTW, I'm pretty sure that's Jim Skiathitis and Theo is in the middle, just standing...

Wrong! Good ol' Link Wray was tuning down a half step in the 50's.
