I wonder if the people from the Huntington Beach Surf Museum would be interested in putting something together for DD? There's is a great venue for "A Benefit at the Beach for the KofTSG" type of show...

this appeared in the NESMA Yahoo forum, posted by VINNIE "O" who used to have a band called SURF SQUAD; they were, essentially, as I understood it, the only 'DICK DALE TRIBUTE BAND' that Dick himself 'authorized' - Vinnie and Dick are close friends so here is Vinnie's post, re-posted here as I thought folks here would be interested in seeing this.... It is with Dickâs permission and the deepest regret that I have sad news to share regarding his health. My husband John and I have been on the ground floor by Dickâs side since day one but remained silent at his request. Last year arriving in Oceanside to perform with son Jimmy at the Guy Takayama Surf Contest he mentioned he didn't feel well. As time went on things got worse so he asked us to set up an appointment with our GI specialist. Within a couple of days tests revealed the rectal cancer was back after a 45-year absence and he has a large tumor. He is currently undergoing 6 weeks of chemo & radiation, then rest, surgery to remove the tumor, more chemo, more rest, then he plans on getting back on the road and kicking butt once again. The idea behind the chemo & radiation is to shrink the tumor so they can remove it safely. He remains upbeat and positive despite effects of the treatments and intense pain from the tumor resting on spinal nerves. On behalf of Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, I will be working on a âtributeâ concert for Dick in the near future. Witnessing 2 + hours of the best performance of his career on New Years Eve despite this life-threatening illness, tells me he has the guts and stamina to get thru this and come out smiling. Heâs taking awhile off touring to deal with getting rid of the cancer. As I talk to him each day I am encouraged by his exceptionally positive attitude and determination to kick this cancer out of his body. Please pray for Dick and I will continue to do the same. If you wish to send Dick positive vibes and encouraging messages you may do so at dick@dickdale.com I'm a lover not a fighter, a hugger not a handshaker and I take friendships very seriously...Love the life you live, live the life you love. I would have no idea if this would apply to Dick or not... But you should really ask permission to have a tribute concert in a person's name. I had the idea brought to me and I really wasn't okay with it, it would have made me feel very uneasy. And make sure the person okay's the charity the money would go to. |

You can be assured if Linda is planning any kind of Tribute to DD it's approved. |

Jake is 100 percent correct on this..we've emailed Dick's attorney to see if doing a fund raiser show here with our band, the pyronauts + would be ok with the Dale family.....we won't do one unless it's ok'd — |

Linda is our D.D. connection - I'll ask her before we make it official. A tribute show is different from a fund raiser. We're not going to raise any money for charity or anything like that. "You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

Well, i'm no Dick Dale but......after the 2nd surgry on my SPINE!! i wish my friends had done something for me and my wife Ronnie. It was the worst time of our lives and we could have used the help AND some money to help pay the bills and stuff. My friends and band mates didn't even come visit me when i was suffering hard in pain because they didn't want to see me like that. That's when my friends became my "friends"!! If Dick Dale needs help.....LET'S ALL DO WHAT WE CAN. The TakeOffs |

That's too bad, that Dick Dale's sick. I guess he can have the year off, if he thinks he really needs it ... If Dick has any problems with a series of get well shows, and I can see where he might, a sort of para-tour, but with the actual tour missing this year, maybe folks could just all play Misirlou about the same time at some suitable time? A kind of Misir-Loo-Loo? Denver's kind of a special case, as far as shows, maybe, since it's his birthday and he probably won't be in town to celebrate it himself. Folks would just have to do it without him. He always downplays the birthday angle here, I think, anyway - "Just another day!" - but I gather he's often forced to accept a cake and a round of Happy Birthday anyway, so I think something on that order might go off if it was handled right. Because I was kind of looking forward to May, now that my ears have healed. As far as a para-tour, well, that could be every year. |

Dick and I are both receiving tons of emails pouring out the love and admiration from so many caring people across the nation...Dick is very pleased to see so much love being poured out...He told me earlier he is doing good today and each day brings him one giant step toward getting out there and kicking butt once again... As for anyone wanting to do a tribute to Dick please email me thru this website and I will give you the information to contact Dick's Business Director for permission or advice... Thanks for your prayers and emails but don't stop there Dick has only just begun to fight...He is my best friend and I'm counting on him being here for a long time to come... Sincerely I'm a lover not a fighter, a hugger not a handshaker and I take friendships very seriously...Love the life you live, live the life you love. |

Dick.... I am so sorry to hear your are sick. I understand how serious this is. Stay strong Dick and kick its ass. You are in my prayers every day, and that's the truth from my heart. I sincerely wish you a speedy recovery. It must be hell for you and that really sucks.... Warmest Regards, Eddie Bertrand "Eddie and the Showmen" |

How about a Dick Dale tribute MP3 comp with all of us submitting our own version of a DD cover?...... Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

And they have to be covers of his vocal numbers. I love his California Sun so much. As much as people love to rag on Dick's singing I think SG101 covers of Dick vocal tunes would make me ashamed of this place. |

That's a GREAT idea - Vocals or intros - it's all good. —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

I put dibbs on "Ring of Fire". We did it instrumentally in the old X-Rays' "Trailer Park Surf Suite." It rocked! ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

I like the idea of putting together a selection of covers of DD tunes for him....I think it might be a problem to send him all the mp3's...when I wanted to send him an advance of our last cd via mp3's he told me that the files might be too large and his server (I believe) might not let them through. If someone here could burn the tracks to a cd we could mail to him. We would love to add a track as long as it's just the one copy for Dick and those involved. We have two studio tracks and several live tracks to pick from... — |
