Permalink What kind of saddles should I buy?

I have a cheap Strat copy that I want to convert into a replica of Dick Dales' Strat from the 60's. What kind of saddles should I buy and do I have to make any more conversions to the bridge?

What name should I give it? I wuz going to call it a "Dickcaster" but that's gonna be the brunt of so many bad jokes. "Beastcaster" dosn't have a good ring. "Beautycaster" just leaves me cold.

"Victorcaster"-mebbe I got something' there.

maybe a saddle like this?

seriously, I don't know about the bridge saddles: I've heard that the graphtec ones are cool. I'm not sure what Mr. Dale uses...

to get some of that DickDaleness into your guitar project, you'll definitely have to block of the tremolo with a big-ass piece of wood. And add custom eyebolt stap holders. And a cool kenpo sticker, an American flag, a pick holder and maybe even a tuner. And some Photoshop fire might help too!

You have to remove the volume pot, and add a few cool switches and buttons...you any good with a soldering iron?

anyway, sorry,I may not have been too much help...

maybe one of the fortunate sons on here who have handled the Beast in person will chime in with the details you are seeking.

Well' I definitely removed all the volume & tone knobs, but from what I can tell from photos from the 60's it looks like he's using Mustang or Jagaur saddles on the bridge.

As for the guitar itself, I'm gonna pass on the US flag, kung-fu sticker and tuner and maybe I'll settle for a pick holder.

Where am I gonna find .16-.60 strings? Do they even make gauges that thick?

The only thing the Fender shop suggests about saddles is that you file down the ends of the Height Adjustment screws. They do this for the DD, JB and EJ strats.

The important thing is the chartreuse sparkle paint job.

Dick Dale? On his strat? I'd be very suprised at this. Those saddles would not work on a strat very well without serious modification. He probably used the usual vintage style strat saddles.

I'm not sure what he is using now. I seem to recall noticing he had modern style strat saddles on there. But none of my pictures are sharp enough to confirm that. So don't quote me on that.

Dick's used GraphTech graphite saddles for quite a while. Don't know if he still does, but I suspect so....

I just got some Ferraglide/Graphtech saddles for my US Deluxe (the string breakage on the stock saddles was killing me Evil ). Should be ready by this evening - I'll post the lowdown on 'em once I get it from the shop.

I got a look up close and personal at DD's strat last June here on the East coast.. the graphtech saddles are still there.

if you call them on the telephone, they are VERY helpful !!!!
they can set you straight with any kind of string you'd ever want to find...they even helped me find double-course round-wound nickel ball-end electric mandolin strings...dang!

Dick used Dean Markley's, I'm not sure if these are still his string-of-choice:
