I play lead guitar in a rockabilly/surf/country-ish quartet. most of my riffs and leads are surf licks. lots of stacatto picking, tons of reverb, straight up surf rock over standard rockabilly music.
the upright bass is interesting with the surfy stuff, but i love playing it.

Vocals come to mind first for Hot Rod music: "Hey Little Cobra," "409," "Boss Baracuda," "GTO." Unlike surf guitar instrumentals, I don't think too many "hot rod" instrumentals made the charts. Here is a pic of my first album--still have it hanging on the wall.
aahhh, goooood album. i think mostly everyone on this forum knows im a huge beach boys fan because i talk about 'em so damn much...
I also love Shut Vol. II by the BBs, and of course, the Super Stocks/Gary Usher Hot Rod stuff.

I'm a big BB fan too. Here's a clip you might enjoy--who said the BB's couldn't perform live in their early days?

Probably nobody that saw them. I caught this lineup plus with Bruce Johnson a few years later when Surf's Up came out. They played and sang very well.

I have that 1964 concert on VHS and can really recommend it for anyone into the early Beach Boys. Of course now also available on DVD:

I wish more bands would fit a few "hot rod" songs in, and you really don't need a great singing voice for some. "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commodor Cody is more rock 'n roll / rockabilly and I think it predated the "surf guitar" influence. Check out this video clip--and the guitar solo in the middle.

they just applied surf/volcano titles to one and hot-rod titles to the other. Exactly the same as what was done with instrumentals back in the sixties when the record execs thought that surf music was a dying fad and hot-rod music was the next big thing.
Hard to imagine a time when the opposite was true and it was surf that was considered commercial.
This is from the CD notes in my Freddy King comp, "Just Pickin'":
"The populrity of twangy-guitar surf instrumentals was cresting in 1963 when King Records fished out the Let's Hide Away... album masters, dubbed audience noises in at the beginning and end of each track, printed up sleeves illustrated with surfers on a beach, and released the package asyou guessed itFreddy King Goes Surfin'."
The incongruity of that strikes me as funny and a bit surreal. Was there nothing those record company execs wouldn't stoop to in order to make a buck at the artist's expense?

I used to listen to a "Hot Rod" tune back in the early '60's, I think it was called "Stick Shift" and I can't remember the group. It started out with a hot rod going up through the gears then the music comes in, and it ends nearly the same. Anyone of my vintage remember this obscure tune?

"Stick Shift" was by the Duals.
I have the 45 somewhere - I forget the label name but it was red.

Actually, it was a national hit peaking at #26 in Cash Box and #25 in Billboard. I think the tune is pretty well known among instro fans today.

Originally released on the Star Revue label and later picked up by New York based Sue Records.

I did not know it was that popular, none of my friends liked it or surf music for that matter, so I only got to play it when I was alone (running the teen canteen dj booth). Thanks for the quick responses.

Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar II has "Stick Shift" by The Trashmen. It's one I'm looking to cover, in the coming future.
