It really isn't about money. I'd glady pay more out of my pocket, which we haven't had to do since we recorded our album two years ago. We really think there would be a greater fanbase if we were on a small indie label. Seattle is hardly a surf rock fan's paradise. But we must try to reach the masses. Top

If you don't mind more out of pocket expenses my advice would be to continue to self release your music on your own label and seek any and all independent distribution channels. This is going to maximize the return on the recording itself as you are going to keep more money from CD sales than you ever would through a label. Then invest money in hiring a publicist or someone like Team Clermont to help generate press such as record reviews and press for your shows and that can help you get radio airplay. Radio servicing is a bit of a crapshoot even on indie radio since the djs/programmers still have to be aware that you exist. That's why it's important to have print and internet publicity in conjunction with radio service. There are a lot of people out there that do this kind of thing - especially out of CA and Nashville. The closest would be the rockabilly/psychobilly scene and I'm close to some of those guys in those bands and it seems like the small indie labels that pick them up often times fold. My reasons for wanting to get onto one of those labels would be the opposite of yours Jake. I don't want to have to pay for my CD printing. The profit to be made in our case really isn't that much. Infact I'd let the indie label have more money if it meant me getting my album out for no cost to myself. I've seen the guys that "run" those labels and I'd rather do my promoting myself then let some guy who thinks black t-shirts with witty overly sexual phrases are the latest style while he promotes my band from his mom's basement. If you get on a label your still a surf band right?
