Clint, any word on a potential podcast?
yes please! Pretty please?
Never done such a thing... someone want to contact me by PM and give me some insight...
Thanks.
And as long as I'm here, my thanks to Eddie and gang for making the long trip down I-5 to KCR for the interview. And to Tena... she's sooo cool!! And Tim (HBkahuna) for both the video and helping arrange the whole interview. Again, this radio gig has greatly exceeded my expectations when I started up six years ago. Becoming friends with people like these is one of those great things I never expected. Very cool!

I have space to host a podcast. Just send me an audio file and I can host it next to the SG101 podcast.

Nice! With an RSS Feed to go along with it, we'd have one hell of a podcast!

This is off-topic, but I thought I would post this publicly so guys like Clint, Tom, Midwest Surf Guy, Jet, and you other real radio show guys could see this.
Clint, it is fairly easy to do a podcast for a guy in your position who already has the content!! You just gotta record your show (I assume you do this already!) in digital format. Then you just have to put the file somewhere on the internet that can handle the bandwidth of everyone downloading it. I picked somewhat randomly a service (podcastspot.com) to do this for SG101. They give you the web/file space and as a bonus create the RSS feed for you that allows you to list your podcast in podcast directories like itunes. I'd be glad to give you any other advice via PM's (or start another thread).
Now back to Eddie Betrand...

Hi World.....
Once again I want to thank you all for your kind words and compliments. Tiki Tena did an awesome job. She made it very easy. And between you and me, she did not show her nervousness as we did the interview. She was well prepared. She made it fun.
Special thanks to Kristena, Clint, Tim Ferrill and Doug Paulin. For those of you who might not know, Doug did that awesome poster announcing the interview. If anyone has not seen it, it's on my web site, click on the appearances tab.
I am so very blessed......

I was getting "The Interview" ready for a podcast, but it looks like Eddie and Tim are working on one at their end.
I was able to look into doing podcasts of my show in general and I've come to the conclusion that there are just too many factors against it... at this time anyway. The difficulties come from my show not really being mine, it's KCR's and the bands I play. In order to completely avoid any copyright problems, I would need to get approval (in writing) from all the bands / artists I play, not to mention KCR (KCR of course wouldn't object). The other main obsticle is the time involved. I tend to keep fairly busy in my work and personal life and to add more to the plate at this time is just a little too much.
I appreciate all the requests to put "The Interview" and others shows up for podcast, but it ain't happenin' anytime soon....

Hi All,
Just out of curiosityâ¦does any body have an idea the demographic of people all over the world that listen to, and love surf music. I have wondered often how many of us are out there. 2,000? 5,000? 10,000? 20,000?
Thanks,
Eddie

Far too few as best as I can tell.... And frankly, that stinks. It dawned on me some years back that "surf music" was everywhere except in mainstream radio. Every time you turn on the tube, if you are listening, you can pick out surf, surfy and instro rock in the backgrounds on numerous prime time TV commercials and backgrounds for TV shows. We just get no radio airplay. Also some years back when we were playing in Savannah (the home of SCAD, Savannah College Art and Design), a number of the art students often dropped in to Devin Michael's Pub where we used to play, and dig on the surf music. To them, it was "new and different." I thought it particularly rewarding that these "kids" were hanging out in a bar listening to a band of old dudes blasting surf and instrumental rock.
We just need some hot new group of kids to break out with a surf hit to be picked up on mainstream radio and wham......Here comes the fourth wave!

Eddie in this day in age with technology and the internet we can reach everyone around world with websites, Myspace and all online mp3 retailers in seconds, fans and musicians can discover, listen and buy with one click of the mouse it's going to be very hard to put into number figures of how many surf fans, surf enthusiasts and musicians are out there, with SG101 alone there is 1200+ and couting some of these folks are fans and musicians from around the world and then you have the many that visit SG101 from day to day in the hundereds that are not registered users so imagine if those visitors stepped up and registered so it may never be known exactly how many world wide surf folk are out there we can only guess?
Cheers

Great question
On the one hand, I don't know that I've ever met anyone at a gig, or generally, that says they hate surf music-- so, at least potentially, there are some 6 billion fans out there (i.e., the entire population of the planet).
On the other hand, if "listen to and love surf music" requires the level of commitment of a Big Tiki Dude, I'd say the group is going to be pretty small...
I think there's more surf music lovers out there than we think, it's just a matter of getting them out to hear it that can be the challenge

Wishfull thinking but there has not been an instrumental of any kind in the top 20/100 in the mainstream or radio for years, sure pulp fiction came out but then again there was no radio play of it in the mainstream I gues the mainstram want's music with vocals a story to be told and to be heard who knows Rockabilly and Swing had it's moments with such artist as The Stray Cats in the late 70s early 80s and then you had the whole Swing thing in the late 90s and those 2 genres did get mainstream radio play and hit the national charts, around the world as well but it was all short lived go figure huh.

I think a surf act needs something beyond just instrumental music. I think the key is getting those fans that don't have the BTD dedication. The most sucessful new "surf" instrumental band Los Straitjackets is always adding something, whether it be half naked women, a skinny european, or larger latin man to sing for a half a set or dance around while the band plays.
There are people who are fans of Los Straitjackets and not fans of instrumental music, and I think even surf music fans can be divided up into groups.

I think the guys (and gals) in NESMA have a really great idea which is based on co-operative support. They do this by showing up for each other's shows and hopefully bringing along friends who may not be ardent fans, but once exposed first hand, may be "conned into showing up at future shows." This way they hopefully can continue to build a fan base.
What it takes locally is for enough people to start showing to please the venue owner and in turn slowly he adds more shows and it hopefully morphs into more and more people showing up, and having a good time.....And the best part guys, is that there ARE no words to get in the way of people having a good time.......

I'm pretty sure there are lots of people who like this kind of music but they just don't know it yet, or aren't aware that they like it. I used to be one of 'em.
I used to think of Eric Johnson and Steve Vai if someone mentioned instrumental guitar music, and I immediately sort of wrote it off as wankery.
At the same time, I always thought that the theme from the Munsters was a SWEET piece of music, and who couldn't love Slaughter on 10th Avenue by the Ventures, or Misirlou or Surf Rider or Pipeline?
Los Straitjackets are always mixing it up, but they always had the whole image thing down cold; it wasn't enough to be a really tight instro-surf band, but an insane instro-surf band with huge medallions, Lucha Libre masks, coordinated movements and Spanglish introductions from the stage completed the picture.
I can't listen to their albums without wondering, "do they wear those goofy masks in the studio?" or "What inspired them to cover THAT?" They're great at what they do!
And they've got me realizing that I actually do love the Ventures, Dick Dale, the Shadows, the Astronauts, Laika, Pollo, and others.

Hi Eddie,
How goes the search for band members? Any idea when you may be ready to start playing out?

Hi Eddie ,
I have wondered that same thing . Last summer I did a show at the pier for the HBISM. Some guy walked up to me and said "why dont any of these bands have singers "? This guy was about 35 yrs old ,I thought he was joking . I told him because its instrumental surf music . He said "whats that, I've never heard of that" so I referred to Pulp Fiction and Miserlou. I still dont think he got it. So my guess would be about 30 of us!
