I'm sure a lot of you got this same email, but this was from Dave on Cowabunga:

I have chosen not to renew web hosting and the domain registration for
Zptduda.Com, which will be effective at the end of January. This will mean that
the Cowabunga links pages will be going away. If you have not already, I highly
recommend that you join SurfGuitar101.com and add your site to their links pages.

I will also be closing down the Cowabunga webring. If your site is currently a
member of the Cowabunga ring, please feel free to remove the banner graphic and
web ring controls from your pages.

Thanks and best regards,

Ryan

That's too bad, but I'm sure it was a lot of work to update, back in the day. I know I used Zptduda a lot to find out about all things surf. It's nice he's "passing the gauntlet" here. SG101 is truly an amazing community/site/info/etc/etc...

I never really used the cowabunga web ring much.
just the yahoo group.

these are totally seperate right?

To my knowledge, yes they are.

The Web Ring was not really related to the Cowabunga Yahoo Group. Web Rings were a 90's way of linking related websites together. I fondly remember clicking on the random site link and bouncing around from site to site back in the day. Thanks for all your work on this Dave, it turned me on to a lot of bands and sites.

I loved zptdudamusic.com as a CD source, too. I suppose that's also exiting? I also made some use of the Web ring. Is the best way to do this sort of thing now Google, etc., indexing?

Even if not, I suppose that if everyone with a surf site added "Cowabunga Web Ring (in memoriam)" or some such to their sie keywords, their sites would eventually start come up in response to that search.

Source of "Cowabunga."

On the other hand, Kawanga (a Los Straitjackets) looks like it could have several different sources. I wondered if there was any connection, but I guess not.

Yeah, with sites like sg101, myspace, etc. the webring isn't as critical as it once was to get your site in front of people. A little sad to see it go though. Was kind of an institution in the surf community.

When I originally suggested the idea for a Cowabunga webring to Dave, many of you will recall that the web itself was still in its static website infancy and Along with Cowabunga, (itself only an internet mailing list at the time), the webring proved to be a great way to promote your band, network and find other bands worldwide.

I would agree that its time has come. I will likely leave the "graphics to nowhere" in place.

I just came here from a tiny Mosrite forum called Zamminc. It's like 4 guys. But when you need specific info, it's not bad to have. Offset and Shortscale are good for Fender info.
