Permalink Dick Dale The Amp Guru

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

From what I have read, Leo Fender regularly used working musicians to road test his guitars and amps. I have a story around here somewhere about the guy that Leo gave the Stratocaster prototype to and asked him to play in the (country music) clubs and see if it generated interest and how it held up, etc. It's well known that Noel Boggs worked on the development of the first Stringmaster steel. Reading Eddie Bertrand's relationship with Leo and the making of the Showman amp is really fascinating.

Anyway, I know that nobody doubts that Fender and Dick Dale collaborated in the same way on some things. It's just in reading this, I'm sorry that he has apparently embellished things to the point that he is now making claims like these.

I have seen him twice. If you like surf music, I think you owe it to yourself to see him if you get a chance. He put on a great show both times. He is a true legend, and you never know how long we are going to have people like this around.

i honestly think it would be very hard to stay humble with all the stuff he's done...

What exactly do you mean Question

Liam Gallagher is the only person on the planet that is less humble than Dick Dale.

At least Dick's earned it.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Ohh come on, I love early Dick Dale, but has he really done that much?

Not as much as Liam Gallagher. One of my favorite moments in music history is when Noel Gallagher said he hoped that Damon Alburn of Blur got AIDS and died. Classic. Noel Gallagher is one of my top 3 songwriters, whereas Liam has very little talent.

To answer Bill's question, more than anybody here at the board or in the surf genre, but not as much as most bands. Sadly he is a one-hit wonder which cannot be refuted. As much as I don't care for Dick the person I love his music and it is sad his songs other than misirlou never permeated the mainstream.

Cannot be refuted in your mind maybe.

What are his other hits? From a cultural standpoint he is more, but from a musical standpoint the mainstream knows him for Misirlou.

This is what is bad about the one-hit wonder stigma. It is merely an indicator of popularity not quality or importance in history.

Dick Dale is more than a one hit wonder in my mind. Since when is that the measuring stick in this genre?

I used it in a measuring stick in response to Bill's question.

I am hardly using one-hit wonder negatively. Most of my favorite bands are no-hit wonders.

well, just the fact that he is still at it and at least performs well, regerdless of how bad his new songs sound. and even let alone his music, surviving cancer for one. some people might be humbled by that, but maybe dick has a weaker personality and is more vulnerable to his own feelings about himself.

I think Dick can still write a good instrumental. I think Nitro is one of his best songs.

As for Dick's cancer humbling him... I don't think cancer is so simple as humbling a person or not. Dick was very young when he survived cancer. It definitely puts things into perspective but you can't let it run the rest of your life. Especially when you make a near full recovery(although you never fully recover) when you are in your 20s.

Dick is a tremendous humanitarian. He just doesn't brag about it so it is little known. He is especially kind in regards to sick & underprivileged children.

I'm with Tim on this one, Zak. It's been shared on this forum, though not lately - check the archive, some of the incredibly generous acts of Richard Monsour. Enough so that it's tempered my opinion of Dick Dale the entertainer.

I've met Dick a couple of times and while I'm not really a fan of his music (except for some of his early stuff) he was always very friendly, and yes he does love to blow his horn. I can only imagine how people in his entourage are sick of hearing the same stories over and over again, but hey that's what keeps him going. He must be around 70 but keeps on playing live shows, not for the money (he's stinking rich on royalties anyway) but because he loves the high. The man is a legend in his own eyes. Does that make him a bad person? Not as far as I'm concerned.

Matter is just energy waiting to happen.

I saw DD play a free show on Hollywood beach (Florida) a couple of years ago. There was enough beach / sound reinforcement to cover about 3 thousand and about 3 hundred showed. Dick kicked ass, like he was playing to 20K, and after the show, hung out and talked like one of the guys. I mentioned I was rebuilding a blackface, and looking for parts, and he gave me his email address, and set me up. I've got nothing but great things to say about the guy.

I'm new to this forum and a first time poster (so maybe I'm missing something I should know about or maybe I shouldn't bother with this forum) but I'm appalled at the amount of Dick Dale bashing going on. I've spoken with Dick at least ten times over the last 14 years and he has been nothing but grateful and courteous to the people I've seen him talk with. Criticizing him for not restringing his guitar to be the way you want it to be strung is outrageous. Is the way he ties his shoelaces acceptable to you? He plays like no other and some people have the nerve to dismiss him? wow. I can only imagine people making such anti Dick Dale posts must be trolling for a reaction.

Hey Ted welcome and hang around a bit. I've run into the same thing here but that's why it's a forum..not all see things the same way. I've found Dick to be a great guy who contrary to some fire fights I've gotten into here, can back up what he says. He wrote a review for our last cd which shall I say has not hurt sales...he has his way as we all do ...he's a good friend and a great guy..stick around Very Happy
