I don't suppose there is an idiot's guide to playing spy music out there?

Most of the spy music released in the 60s is a lot closer to crime jazz than surf - sharp horn blasts, dramatic melody lines, etc.

Wow, I'd love to give a listen to some of that so-called "crime jazz". Can you suggest any titles, cuts, or artists I might look for?
I'm imagining some sexy sax solos right out of a 40's noir soundtrack.

As far as comps go, these two (both on Rhino) are out of print, but they pop up on eBay pretty frequently:
This one's also out of print, but I think Crypt Records' mailorder still has it on CD (or LP at the least):

For soundtrack stuff, I'd check out Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" and "Experiment in Terror," Duke Ellington's "Anatomy of a Murder," Elmer Bernstein's "The Man With the Golden Arm," and, for a somewhat lighter take, Joseph Mullendore's "Honey West."
Happy hunting,

In case anyone reading this doesn't own the following comp on RPM records, I cannot recommend it strongly enough:

this is available (as well as a lot of other cool stuff) on emusic.com:

Yeah, I like Mancini.
Chris and I had a spy band called the KAOS Killers. We used to do "A Shot In the Dark", "Pink Panther" and "Peter Gunn".
Another fave was "Come Spy With Me" by Hugo Montenegro.
I'd say Spy is Surf's cool, sexy cousin.

I like that one a lot - I think some of the songs ended up on the two volumes of "Music to Read James Bond By." If I had to pick a favorite, it'd definitely be David Lloyd's "Confidential: Sounds for a Secret Agent." The four Bond covers are great, but the eight originals (named after and supposedly inspired by Ian Fleming's stories) are amazing:

I just got the S.P.Y.T.I.M.E. CD credited to the Ulterior Motive Orchestra which is actually a combination of tracks from the "Sounds For A Secret Agent" David Lloyd album and another 1965 spy music release by Johnny Pearson and his London Orchestra.
I paid £0.43 at Amazon UK for a new sealed copy but just noticed it's even cheaper from US Amazon market sellers with new copies starting at $0.65!

I got this CD when it came out in the nineties. I remember really liking it. I've listened to it a bunch of times, though it's been a while since the last time. I'll check it out again when I get home.
Thanks, Klas.

I really like that CD, and you certainly can't argue with the price. I wish the rest of the songs from the David Lloyd album would make it to CD, but I'm not holding my breath. The liner notes - by Brother Cleve of Combustible Edison - are great, too.
FYI. some of the same songs from S.P.Y.T.I.M.E. pop up in vastly different arrangements on this CD:

There are a few other cool Bond-themed jazz albums, too:

(The Basie LP has much better cover art, but I can't seem to find a pic.)

With the SPYTIME CD only having 12 tracks, one can wonder why they didn't include both the original albums in complete.
