Permalink Gary Hoey - Surf Benefactor or Surf Nightmare??!!

New Topic

Have any of you heard this guy? I heard a plug for a political festival down in San Diego that mentioned they'd have music by the "new king of surf guitar - Gary Hoey". He plays some classic surf hits like some heavy metal hair band from the 80's. Still, I suppose any new exposure for the genre is better than not........right???

he has been around for ages..... i belive he recorded the endless summer soundtrack, which has some very nice instros on it. Hoey is not primarily a surf musician, he is an instro guitarplayer who is surf influenced.

Well if by ages you mean the 90's....and he did stuff on the Endless Summer II soundtrack, not the classic original. I used to see this guy on the Headbangers Ball. He's a shredder in the vein of Vai and Satriani. Might be entertaining if you are in to that kind of thing....

Brian
and he did stuff on the Endless Summer II soundtrack,

I seem to rememer edition two was all shortboards and shitty music.

I only saw half of it once though, and it's years ago so i could be wrong.

Yeah, I remember this guy and that song Hocus Pocus. He had Kenny G hair for a while. His interest in surf seems to be marginal at best, hence is covers of the most basic surf songs.

His sound definetely isn't surf, with lots of digital distortion and super hot humbuckers. Very much in the guitar wankery school of Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson.

Gary is SUPER nice we have opened for him in Fresno, and I have talked to him a couple of times, can't help but like that guy, no matter if you like his playing or not! I would not call him surf... but if it helps open the door for a new audience for surf then GREAT!

Hey WR, one of the two main characters (Wingnut) was a longboarder, and, the Halibuts had music in ESII. Of course I'm sure we don't appeal to everyone.

brian my life does not date much past the early 90's Smile so to me its ages. I remeber when i first started learning guitar, he wrote a very informative coulmn in Guitar For the Practicing Musician magazine. Yeah he is not a true surf guitar player, but he is a very good musican who has a lot of surf influence to his style.

PS Rick I really enjoyed ESII and the souundtrack

Stigger
Yeah he is not a true surf guitar player, but he is a very good musican who has a lot of surf influence to his style.

That's questionable--his newest album was a lot closer to surf than what he'd done before, but that has everything to do with the song selection and nothing to do with his actual playing. Shredding on a trad song is still shred, not surf. And let's not forget his back catalogue has almost twice as mahy covers of Christmas songs than it does surf tunes.

As others have said, his style is way more in the Lame Vai/Satriani/Eric Johnson/let's-overplay-until-our-fingers-bleed camp than surf. I don't see the exposure necessarily hurting the genre, though--if Gary Hoey gets someone to go out and buy DD's King of the Surf Guitar then that's great. More likely, though, he'd cause someone to go out and pick up Surfing With the Alien.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Gary Hoey was on Clint Beachwoods show a year or so back. Seemed like a very nice guy. they did talk about trad. vs shread style surf.
and I think Clint played a few modern bands for him.
I like his x-mas stuff, but the surf cd bored me.

^^ I just read something recently, I think by Clint, about Hoey's appearance o his show. Clint asked Hoey if he had ever heard of Paul Johnson, Insect Surfers, etc. and Hoey hadn't heard of anybody connected with surf music scene.

WR, no offense taken. I was really teasing in my message. Guess I should have used one of them there Emoticons. And, the real title of "Caldera" is "Uncle Fester's Comb". The only place we ever called it Caldera was on the CD. Can't remember why why we did that.

BTW, being the trad surf snob that I am, I'm not much of a fan of the
Gary Hoey thing.

... and play it backwards...

I looked at GH's site, hey, at least he put up a pic of him and DD, so he must be proud of the connection.

Everyone and his dog has a photo of DD if it helps sell records !

Gary Hoey is better at doing Christmas Carols through lots of distortion than SURF.

I'd rather listen to Jeff Beck if I want to hear Instrumentals that have distortion.

my 2p.
