Hey DD, the boxed set is worth the money.

As for the tank settings, I'm betting EddieK will chime in on this or maybe one of the guys from The Aquasonics. For many they had THE sound. I strive for that rhythm noise.

o yes aquasonics get the sound...

we are working in LongBards about the Astronauts sound..no exactly ..but we think that the As..sound is the BONE...is he sound and the rythm..no only the melody and the musicians style....
stronuats was the BONE of the surf...

Ther Astronauts tank settings

This is something very close enough in tone and drip Wink
I am getting these tones from a vintage 1962 6G7-A Bandmaster with a vintage 1965 Reverb unit and a 1962 vintage Fender Jaguar, the 1962 blonde Bandmaster 6G7-A is dead on close to The Astronauts Blonde 1961-62 Showmans

Tank Settings
Dwell (5)
Mixer (7)
Tone (6 1/2)

Here's my 1962 vintage Bandmaster, one of the reasons I got a Bandmaster is that I am a big ass fan of The Astronauts and this head is the sound, and this is as close as I'll get to a 1962 Showman and it's practically a 1962 Showman minus the wattage and the cool thing about this Bandmaster that it came with a bigger stock tranny then the smaller one these are seen with and so it has a bigger, beefy clean tone with not much break up and it's very loud @ 4 on the volume.

kyle, you failed to mention what pickup selection you use for the Astronauts sound. Am I correct in assuming Bridge only? I also suspect that more than guitar was going through the reverb on those recordings, some type of percussion - anyone know if that's the case or not?

I've found there are several things that come into play to get close to The Astronauts style chunking dripping sound. It's in the way you pick and mute the strings along with the right guitar more than anything.
I have the best luck on guitars with big single coil pickups like a Mosrite style or even a Jazzmaster. The best guitar I have for that sound is The Tokai Hummingbird or the 60 Custom Hallmark with both pickups on. Reverb tank with all 3 knobs bouncing around high. It is hard for me to get the sound out of a Strat or any guitar with a Strat style bridge.

Oops Embarassed I used a mixture of both pickups activated for some tracks and then the bridge only for a few tracks but the main sound for the lead on The Astronauts sounded to me like the bridge I'm no expert but I just hear what I hear I don't think they used any other kind of percussion? the drummer sure has a distinct signature shuffle style.

Maui is the keeper of the Astronauts sound in the Aquasonics - if you like any of the Astronauts rhythm sound in our records, it's Maui playing it.

He hits the strings VERY, VERY hard when he does it, and mutes the strings to the point of almost no sound. With the Reverb cranked up, it sounds very good, but he gets worked doing it - usually only two songs in a row before his hand conks out playing that way.

As far as the Astronauts sound on their records, I think the studio echo had a lot to do with it. The RCA records studio was famous for the echo chamber they had -

Eddie Katcher plays with a little echo live, and it sounds really thick and full when he does drippy reverb.

These are 2 , 1968 Tokai Hummingbirds RI.
Although they may remind you of some of the radical style guitars they have today, remember that these came out in 1968. Tokai's Mosrite influence guitar. With the popularity of the Ventures playing Mosrites in Japan, the Japenese became obsessed with making Mosrite style guitars. With Surf music pretty dead in the states by 1968, it was still a big influence in Japan. They only made these for a very short period of time. As 1969 rolled around, the Japan domestic guitar manufacturers pretty much dried up with only a few survivors like Yamaha and Aria.

about Astronauts percusion..., the druummer was excellent and he was guilty of this Incredible sound. If you try to get the rythm of the Astronauts style you have to play diferent to the modern drum style..

The percusion is excelent....is 50% Astronuats sound..., is the rythm and the reverb...
