Jeff(bigtikidude)

that's cool.

though it's technically a double post, I propose we keep this general forum topic up for discussion of the actual cd. great stuff.

btw, its says

It's the definitive story on how surf music began. You can read all
about it
and sample the tracks NOW at PJMOTO.COM: simply go to the catalog page,
click the thumbnail for this album, and voila! ‹ the "album page"
with all
the tunes and info will appear! (Hint: don't tell anyone, but you can
actually read my commentary there for free as well - just click on
"download
album notes.")

if tha means you can read the booklet online I urge everyone to go read it asap, it's great stuff!

also the cd is available for download, but Id get the actual cd. imo it's a small booklet with an illustrative cd rather than the other way around.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

I asked Paul about the 2 extra songs, so here is his answer.
Jeff(btd)

Hi Jeff -

Thanks for helping to get word out about this. And since I assume
you'll be
passing this along as well, I will go into some detail in answering
your
question about the two "new" tracks that are included in this
re-release:

One of the new tracks is actually an edited version of the long,
rambling
recording of "Bedlam" that's on the Sundazed "Volcanic Action" CD. That
recording was made right after I had written the tune and before we had
finalized an arrangement for it (which is why it just rambles on for 4+
minutes). This new edited version pares it down and puts it into the
form it
would have had if the arrangement had been done at the time.

The other new track is a ridiculous vocal number called "Giggling Girl"
‹
the b-side of the "Rockin' Pants" single by the Initials ("backed by"
the
Belairs). This was a Coasters-style group we met at a show... they
asked us
to provide the music behind them for this session. It is pretty awful,
really - we left it off the earlier releases, but my partner in this
re-release (Greg Russo) thought we should include it for "historical
purposes."

I went along with this because the precedent for including bad tracks
was
already set. There were already a few tracks on the album that make me
cringe, but I recognize that they need to be included to make this the
"full
and honest" history of the band that it sets out to be....

I'm NOT talking about the early home recordings ‹ I love these
tracks and
I'm happy to share them in all their "charming simplicity." But there
are a
few others I would leave off if I only wanted to show the Belairs in
the
best possible light: "Giggling Girl" of course; "Squirt" (recorded
under
such bad conditions that it's just a mess); the demo 45 version of
"Volcanic
Action" (you'll love this ‹ it was recorded without reverb ‹ they
were
supposed to add it in later and didn't, so it ended up sounding
dead...);
also the b-side of this demo, "Runaway" (lackluster performance, dull
recording); and maybe the early home recording of "Mr. Moto"
(essential, of
course, for "historical purposes," but the sax here is just so
dreadful!)...

Everything else I like just fine - it all gets a "no cringe rating."
(This
is my test for whether a new recording is ready for release to the
public: I
must be able to listen to it and remain fully relaxed, with no muscles
tensing to compensate for something that's "not quite right"...)

But hey - THIS album is all about conveying the true history of the
period,
and I was resolved from the beginning that this would mean sharing a
few of
the cringe-inducing clunkers along with the others. So, so be it!

Thanks again Jeff ‹
