to quote the new issue of rolling stone......neil young at the chicago theatre 11/13/07

"....wrapped up with a bizarre surf-guitar instrumental, complemented by the occasional bang of a gong. even the most hardcore of young's fans probably had trouble recognizing the song as 'the sultan', a track young first recorded in 1963 with his high school band, 'the squires'--especially since that was the last time he played it."

Wow. I like the comment: " i believe Neil is starting to promote his Archives :)"

If only the rhythm section had a clue..... Sad

I've always thought Neil was one of the best songwriters ever, so this was really cool to hear. Thanks Klas. The song reminds me of the Shadows, who if I remember were his biggest influence for his instro days.

Oh my god... Klas didn't even post in this thread. I think I need to rest for a week... I worked full time during finals week.

Thanks Carol.

OMG, thank you MOM!!!

I have a good friend who is a HUGH Neil Young fan and has all his albums.
But my friend laughts at surf music.

Wait till I show him this one, and tell him the facts. I always new Neil Young played surf at one time. Just about everyone did back then.

VERY NICE FIND!! Rock

The rumor is that The Sultan will be on Neil's next vault collection. Of course he still has the master tapes! The original single is so rare it is made of unobtainium. Read Phil Dirt's review of the single at Reverb Central under the band name The Squires. Oh, and of course it sounds like The Shadows- Neil is from Canada!

Thanks for posting that, Carol! Neil Young was really into the
Shadows early in his career. Has anybody heard his cut on the
Shadows tribute CD, Twang"? Neil did "Spring Is Nearly Here"
with fellow Canadian Randy Bachman. It's pretty cool. There
are some good things on this CD: Peter Green's "Midnight" is
sublime. I like Steve Stevens' version of "the Savage", too.
Richie Blackmore's "Apache" is dreadful to my ears. Hank Marvin
himself covers "Rise & Fall of Flingel Bunt". Hank's guitar work is
great, but the modern drum sound ruins it for me. Other artists
on the CD are Mark Knopfler, Peter Frampton, Brian May, Tony
Iommi, Keith Urban & Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and
Bela Fleck. To me, most of this CD varies from mediocre to awful,
but the few good cuts still made it a worthwhile purchase for me.

I have the 45'. Looked for it for years and finally....... Smile

Ha! how about that, Neil Young goes 'surf', my wife won't believe it until I show her the Youtube clip.

Way to go Carol, nice pick up. Wink Very Happy

Yeah, I'm sort of a fan of his early stuff, but I had never heard about this. Pretty neat. Cool

Surf has bled into more music than we realize, just like punk. It's like salsa becoming as common as ketchup.

Neil was just interviewed this week on Fresh Air. Terry brings up the Sultan and asks his thoughts. Unfortunately, he was rather dismissive of it and didn't really discuss instrumental music in any context. I was disappointed Cry She seemed to like it though!

Couldn't find Aurora, or the Treble Spankers' cover of it.

dThis all happened in my home town of Winnipeg. Those 45's of The Sultan/Aurora were only sold at high school dances and local gigs so I'm always scouring garage sales for one of these uber rare 45's.

Lots of people on local musician pages relate stories of seeing Neil perform this and many other instrumentals at local dances.

Here is another one called Mustang from 1963

This is good news.
I have been dragging my 15yr old son to shows I think are "important" Bob Dylan, Dick Dale and on Oct 8 we go to Cleveland for Neil Young. I bores the lad, but some of it has to be sinking in that nintento etched brain of his.

Love it! Still looking for a decent YouTube post of Aurora. I've had a soft spot for the Squires since I first heard a cover of Aurora by the Treble Spankers some years ago now. I always used to think of Young in terms of Crazy Horse. I heard to Suite for Judy Blue Eyes one too many times in high school to be able to like CSN(&Y). The reflex to change stations is over powering.
