Well...you can say that about the Ventures too...as far as I'm concerned everything they did with Gerry McGee is bloody awful.

I used to agree with this statement and still do to a certain extent. However about a year ago I actually sat down and listened to Swamp Rock and, it has become one of my favorite guitar records. I think that it is comparable to James Burton's solo records (corn pickin' and slick slidin' and The Guitar Sounds of).

I realize that these records sound cheesy to most of the rest of the world, but I like Tony Joe White and Jerry Reed too. Plus I'm a cheesy middle aged dude.

love them or hate them, it doesn't matter.

they've paid their dues and everyone on here should be glad the music that we all love or has influenced what we love is getting the recognition it deserves.

this could be the shot in the arm everyones been waiting for since 'pulp fiction' put surf back in the limelight (ever so briefly) in the early 90's.

I saw (witnessed is probably a better term) ... Lux Interior (the
singer) came onstage, drank an entire gallon of wine(!), stripped off
his clothing, and was strutting around buck-naked until some chick threw
her panties onstage, and he put them on his HEAD, wearing nothing
but the paties and his high heels!

What's more impressive was that he was sober.

I dunno...comparing Gerry McGee to James Burton...I wouldn't really think they're anywhere near being on the same level.

I feel where your coming from kind of...I think that James Burton was a definate influence on McGee. They knew each other back home in Louisiana and they've both cited Chet Atkins as a primary influence. I am definately a James Burton fan and frankly Swamp Rock is the only McGee era Ventures record that I can stomach, but he is a good fingerpicker. I have seen the Ventures with Jerry McGee a few times and I have watched a fair amount of video footage of James Burton including his instructional video and their right hand technique is very similar. If you listen to The Guitar Sounds of James Burton and The Ventures Swamp Rock I think you will hear a lot of similarities, especially production wise. They have a few things in common actually.

I am so glad the Ventures got in the hall of fame. Now they can go away and die and take their suck ass music with them! I fart in their general direction.

This could only be said by someone with such a limited musical vocabulary that they would be considered illiterate.

I love their "Mosrite era" material but I can't really listen to anything they did after, and the earlier stuff doesn't really excite me. I think their best stuff was '63-'66 and they started going downhill after that.

It took me a while to warm up to the first couple Jerry McGee albums, but they did grow on me. (Mostly the originals - I think their cover choices got worse and worse as time went on.) Same with the Nokie stuff after "Guitar Freakout" - I don't think it comes close to their best stuff, but I still enjoy it.

As for the Cramps..."Rockinnreelininauklandnewzealandxxx" and "Date With Elvis" are the last two that I really like.

Same here - everything after those is just not the same. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd flip a coin between "Smell of Female" and "Psychedelic Jungle."

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I don't have anything to add really . . . just wanted to say that the mention of The Ventures, Cramps and James Burton (Corn Pickin' Slick Slidin!!) in the same thread is the reason that SG101 is my favorite forum.

ok, I will say that the first time I saw the Cramps, a guy named Buck Naked opened for them. He wore nothing but a toilet plunger. Lux had his work cut out for him that night.

Those are my 3 faves. Date with Elvis tops all.

And now you have added to this brilliant thread by remembering the late great Buck Naked of the Bare Bottom Boys. He was an SF legend- doorman at the Paradise Lounge for years, called his band's music Pornobilly- who was stupidly murdered when he was walking his dog at 3AM by a bird nut. I fondly remember his one video "Bend Over Baby and Let Me Drive".

Thanks,
Ferenc

I got this in my email, apparently from Nokie Edwards' booking agent, and was going to post a news story then I found this thread. Good news!:

Hi Trey:
Just to let you know that Nokie Edwards (and The Ventures) have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Big party will be held in NY in March. Announcement will come out January 8.

Big news and thought I'd share.

I concur.

The Cramps are easily my most memorable show. My favorite albums have always been the first two, but there are gems scattered throughout the catalog. They kinda became a cartoony parody of themselves after a while, but I still plan to own everything they've ever done eventually.

As for the Ventures getting into the RnRHOF, good for them, but I have never put a great deal of stock in it. If it were legit they'd have been in there years ago. I'm surprised they didn't wait for more of them to die.

Edited to add:
This was in the Wikipedia entry for The Cramps.

"In honor of the excess of The Cramps, there is displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a shattered bass drum head that Lux's head went through during a live show."

I wonder if that's true.

It is absolutely insane that the Ventures are only going in now. How many current members of the HoF learned "Walk, Don't Run" and "Perfidia" on their first six-strings?

"I didn't realize just how bad I wanted a Strat and a Super Reverb until I heard the Ventures!" - lots of rockers, famous and not.

And anybody who doesn't at least appreciate the Ventures' massive impact on the rock and roll genre (much less love them) has a real tin ear and a snob prob.
