Permalink Fender super champ XD

New Topic

Anybody has tested this amp? I am looking for a reasonably priced amp to play at home, so 15W is Ok. It has tubes and 10"... any comment?

Thanks in advance!

pd. please, avoid "for $1000 more you have a twin reverb"-like responses... ;)

I haven't tried that one but I have something similar and it sounds great. It is a Champ SE made a little later, 25 watts, 12", similar solid state preamp with tube output. It also has a crunch channel. I see them on ebay occasionally for about $150. I don't use it anymore because I have a 70s Champ that is better. They can be found for about the same price as a Super Champ XD.

If given the choice, I would get a recent-production (beige PCB) Fender Blues Junior without so much as a moment of hesitation, over the Champ XD. The Blues Jr. is also 15 W but it is all tube, has a nice reverb, a 12-inch speaker, and great sound for home, stage, practice, or for mic-to-PA live use.

Are you wanting that Champ XD because of all the amp models and digital processing built-in and whatnot?

I was going to suggest that too, but they are $400 now. The Pro Jr. is the same amp with a 10" and no reverb for closer to $300. I have a Blues Jr. too, nice small amp, almost too loud for the house if you have neighbors.

$400, ouch! I paid $220 for mine, used and a only slightly beaten just this past April. It is made in the USA but with the later circuit revision and had all new JJ tubes. I got a good deal but only a little bit of one. Craigslist.org, my friend! Or eBay as they seem to go often for around the $250-300 range.

Get an Ampeg Jet off of ebay. Buddy just got a vintage one for $300.

Honestly, modern practice amps aren't worth a damn. I'd much rather play not plugged in.

think about what kind of home use you'll be wanting. the vibro-champ XD is 5 watts and for me that is more than enough for home playing, but it depends what kind of volume you want at home.

The chance that the digital effects sound even remotely usable is pretty slim, although I never heard these ones. I wouldnt buy it before checking it out in person if the effects are what draws you. Id opt for a SF champ, or a simpler modern amp.
