I'm new to playing surf-style music though I've played Blues, Country, and Rockabilly for awhile and build and repair amps. After reading through this forum and borrowing a Mustang for a rehersal, I'm wondering if the sound folks are looking for from a Jaguar or Mustang is a fat "in series" tone (as compared to the "scooped" parallel tone like you find with the middle position of a Tele or positions 2 and 4 of a Strat)? If so, I'm wondering if the Jerry Jones Neptune guitars would be a good choice for a surf rig...perhaps for rhythm?
Also, folks seem to prefer 12" speakers. Is anybody using closed back (or small ported) 2x10 cabs for their rigs...especially in smaller club settings?

Alright...well let me ask this...
Is anybody using Jerry Jones/Danos/Silvertones for their surf music?

I've thought about using my Danelectro. It would seem to be in the right spirits seeing that most of the original surf guitarists probably had cheapo guitars. I always find the Jaguar to work best though for more traditional sounding surf, an dthe Danelectro to work out on the more 50s garagy sounding instrumental Link Wray sounding stuff.

I had a Mustang once that I really hated. It felt like a toy, and the sound was thin. I was playing rhythm at the time but I wouldn't consider buying a new one. I'm very happy with a Jag.
