like so many of us, i'm sitting on heaps of vinyl. a lot of my newer albums are in pristine condition because i played them once as i recorded them onto cassette tape.

i just got this turntable and i'm stoked. it cost around $130. the recording quality is quite good in my opinion. it is very easy to use. i'm using it with the SPIN DOCTOR program instead of the one that comes with it. my only complaint so far is i can hear variations in speed if a record is warped. if this happens it's usually on the first song on the record.

i've been looking at that. but would i still need to get a preamp to play on my existing stereo ?

i don't know. it does have RCA line out holes. it has a cheesy sounding speaker built into it.
i have it plugged directly into my eMac. my eMac is plugged into an old sherwood tube amplifier with some JBL speakers. it has killer sound.

I'd certainly buy more vinyl, once I get me one of those. Besides, one of these days, I'm wanting to cover "Jungle Fever" by The Tornadoes (B-side to "Telstar"), and the only form I have it in, currently, is on 45. There are also songs from several hot rod albums I have, such as Mustang by The Zip Codes, that I'd love to start picking out, but again they only exist in my collection on vinyl.

Thanks for the review, Carol! Now that I know the ION USB turntable is more than "just a toy," I'll put it on my short list of "gear to buy."

does the portable ion have a dust cover? the bigger brother ion doesn't seem to.

it has a removable cover but you can't leave a record on it with the cover on. i messed around with it some more this afternoon and again i see the main flaw is with warped records. i can definitely hear the speed changing on some songs.

i've also got a really nice hitachi turntable that's about 20 years old. i wish there was a way i could play my records on it and run it through the ion to convert my vinyl.

i'm not saying it's a great piece of equipment but it is an inexpensive way to convert albums.

upon further experimentation, i've discovered if a record is warped enough that the speed varies, you can put the 45 adapter on the turntable, place the album on top of it and the wobble in the sound pretty much disappears.

haha. that is awesome.

does your older turntable have outputs? or is it a big self-contained unit with amp and speakers in one huge box?

if it has outputs, you can always use the phono preamp into a recording interface and record that way.

of course as soon as i posted this the next album i tried to copy varied in speed all the way through. i tried to trick the turntable but i didn't work. so i'm back to experimenting again. i can't figure out why some albums record perfectly and others don't. if the ion had 'line in' jacks i would try to run my other turntable through it, but it only has 'line out'.

If you have some kind of preamp you can just run the record player into it, then run a line in from the preamp to your computer's sound card and digitize that way. Use Audacity or something like that to record it.

i downloaded audacity a few months ago and had no luck with it. i'm going to give it another try.

being on the verge of insanity converting vinyl to my mac, i went back and tried again with my nice hitachi turntable connected to my computer with an iMic using spin doctor softwear. suddenly it started working. i know not why and am not going to question it. Shocked
