Does anyone know if there is going to be another Exotica event in Chicago this summer?

I do know that tomorrow night, the DvA Gallery is having their Tiki Anniversary Party and that the Cocktail Preachers will be performing http://www.dvagallery.com/shows_2006.htm.

Other than that...SHAG is doing an art show at the same gallery on July 15 (not sure if there will be music).

Regarding Exotica, all I heard is that they were taking a year off and were planning to do it again in '07.

If you are looking for a good road trip (not too far from Chicago), might I suggest Java & Jet's Atomic Frolic (www.atomicfrolic.com) in Champaign, IL featuring the Madeira & the Metrolites? The event just got some great press in the Hub (local alternative weekly). Check it out: http://www.thehubweekly.com/cover/index.php?id=47

What is Exotica?

Some Exotica and Tiki enthusiasts have off and on put together these events. In 2003 I believe they asked the Cocktail Preachers to help them out with music. So the CP's put together an awesome show featuring The Troubadours (Ivan & his Dad's Shadows tribute band), The CP's, and The Volcanos.

I don't think anything happened in 2004.

Last year, Eddie & Melanie Angel put together a show with Los Straitjackets, The Neanderthals, The CP's, The Nebulas, The Madeira, & The Exotics. It was simply amazing.

Phil or Steve might have more inside info than me.

The events usually last a couple of days and also feature Hawaiian music, tiki stuff, retro clothing, lots of booze, food, etc.

See the photos section for pics of musical portions of both the 2003 and 2005 events.

Brian,

Yeah, I heard that there's no 2006 equivalent of that great Chicago show we attended last year, but apparently its organizers are directing folks to some Tiki fest down in Florida this fall.

I'll post more about it once I find that info. (It's on my other computer.)

Are you talking about the Hukilau October 5-8 in Fort Lauderdale?

Thanks

Yeah, that's the one.

The schedule is mighty light on actual surf music at The Hukilau, athough that group called APE -- featuring a live tiki-carver who chisels Easter Island visages from a block of wood, while the band plays exotica -- sure looks amusing! Laughing

I saw APE in Palm Springs...their carver dude was pretty cool!

Exotic jungle music sounds....

Watch out Brian, as you know...Guy will take off from Florida right after the show and drive all night to get back to Ohio.

Yeah - I know a ton of people that are headed down to Hukilau this year. I can't go Crying . If you are looking for something a little closer to the Midwest, the Hot Rod Hula Hop (that was mentioned in another thread) will be taking place Saturday, August 19 in Columbus, Ohio. The official site is not yet up, but keep your eye on: www.FraternalOrderofMoai.org/events.html for details.

Right now, the bill includes:

The Madeira
The Crimson Ghosts
Fishermen (with Barnyard Burlesque)
The CryptoKats
Knukel Drager

It should be a blast!

Hmmm...Jet, How far is Columbus, Ohio from Athens, Ohio? Question

Hmmm...gotta tell ya, I don't get over that way much. Columbus is smack in the middle of the state and Athens is southeast of it. Looking at the map, looks like there is a direct road and that it is around 75-100 mi (I would estimate an 1.5 hours or so). I am sure some of the Ohio folks on here could give you a better idea (my drive from Illinois will be more like 5 hrs.)

Yeah, Athens to Columbus isn't that bad of a drive; I'd say two hours tops. Probably less.

I have some research I'd like to do in Athens, a day or two in the university library there.

Now I'm wondering if I could combine the trips.

Hmmm.......

GREGORY NICOLL, Southern Surf Syndicate Agent # 44

Oh yeah, if you are that close, gotta combine 'em!

Actually, there is a dinner the night before (Friday, the 18th) at a restaurant in Columbus called the Tropical Bistro. They will be roasting a pig and mixing up some fine Polynesian cocktails (I say "fine" because the old bartender from the Kahiki in Columbus will be making them). If you are not familiar with the Kahiki, it was one of the most incredible and infamous Tiki bars in the world. Unfortunately it is no more, but many of the waitstaff, bartenders, etc. are now at the Bistro.

As you saw, the event will have some great bands...there is also the car show, DJs, food, etc.

If interested, I do have some hotel info and other details about the event. The event website is in the process of being completed - more info will be available there soon as well.

Thanks, Jet! I'll keep this in mind.

I need to work on the Athens, Ohio assignment first, before I get too excited about the swell shindig in Columbus....
