Brian I'm no computer dude but what's the best route, upgrade your exciting tower or buy a brand new tower with a duo core with everything in it? last year I walked into CompUSA to find out about uprading my system and by the end the guy said to me "your better off buying a whole new computer cuz when you add it up it comes to be cheaper" hhmmmm
it's like WHAT!

Brian, maybe next time put a 'NSFW' disclaimer first.

I Know, I know - 'Mac-Evangelists' are excruciating bores.... but since I changed to Macs about 3 years ago my 'computer life' changed from being a source of stress to a source of joy.
Viruses, crashes and random unexplained occurrences pretty much all departed with Windows. Best thing I ever did.

Well, after spending about 3 hours taking the old crap outta my case and putting in the new stuff....The Moment of Truth....I powered it on and it freaking' POSTed!!!!!
(That is such a terrifying moment, I can't tell you....I had visions of it bursting into flames...)
Ruhar:....I love Linux...but no, this is my gaming rig. I resisted Vista for now (like a lot of people I hear) and am putting XP on it as I type this on another computer.
Kyle: hard to say. If you are a computer geek like me it is so much fun to build your own rig. If your current computer is more than 3-5 years old and you aren't all that interested in building your own, I say buy a new one. If your current computer is less than 3-5 years, you could make a few key upgrades to buy you some time and it would cost less money. It just depends on what kind of motherboard you got in there and how interested you are about learning all this stuff.
Warren:
estreet: I have several friends who speak very highly of their Macs, so yeah that is another option for you Kyle. I would buy a Mac too as you can now open a shell and get at their BSD-like OS for super geek freakout action (Ruhar, are ya listening?). But as I said, this is for gaming, and games are all about Windoze (unfortunately).
I took a ton of pictures if anyone is interested. I'll upload them to the above link assuming I can get this beast up and running.

How many gigs of Ram?
I have Vista and I love it. Just a fancy version of XP. My laptop has 2gig of RAM so it runs Vista rather quickly. I think people have problems in the 1gig of ram area.

Yep, Darwin is just BSD (basically) underneath. So you get all the cool Unix utils and apps (vi, emacs, ssh, cron, etc). I'd love a Mac Book Pro, but man, the freaking price tag!! Anyways, for now its Slackware Linux for me

Don't you love that new computer part smell? Seriously, there's nothing quite like opening the Motherboard box and getting a big hit of that circuitboard ether.
Anyway, yeah, you can definitely go cheaper by buying a ready made computer...
But that's sort of like comparing a Toyota Corolla to a hand-built hot rod.
And the components aren't quite as sexy...

I'm not ready for Vista yet. I am staying with XP. Apparently so are a lot of gamers. I have 2 Gigs of RAM.
I'm now typing at you from my new computer. Still got a bunch of drivers and stuff to install.
And yes, the new motherboard smell is quite intoxicating.
I'm as giddy as a school girl.

I think that the almondy smell of a motherboard (which I also love) actually comes from Cyanide used in the manufacturing process..... so don't take too big a hit of it ![Smile Smile](/media/smiley/images/icon_smile.gif)
What games are you into brian? I used to play a lot of different ones until I discovered World of Warcraft then that kind of took over all other games - oh and my life too...
Dont forget you can boot all new Macs dual boot into native Windows these days and they make pretty good games machines - although they aren't in the running if you are a $600 graphics card type of serious gamer I admit. However, they currently ship with an intel 2.4 dore duo 2 and an ATI HD2600 PRO 256 ram - so not shabby......

Yeah actually the motherboard did smell like death.
WoW huh? Aka PC Crack. I have managed to stay away from that one but I have a friend who is hooked.
I mainly play first person shooters, multiplayer, online with others: Call of Duty is the favorite, but also COD2 and I hope to get COD4 within a few hours (one of the reasons I upgraded.... )
Also Half Life 2 and I'm going to pick up the Orange Box very soon also.

I'm going to upgrade to a nice iMac soon, as I am getting into an interactive multimedia design program when school starts up in January. I'm pretty excited, considering I'm on a crappy old Dell with a dialup connection right now.

The Orange Box is amazing Brian. I don't play games on PCs but I have it for my Xbox 360 and you will love it. Portal is the coolest game in a long time.

I didn't love Portal, but it's definitely the only XBox 360 game I've played that wasn't a complete disappointment.
