As you might have seen in this story, through some cosmic dice rolling that boggles my mind, the present day Surfaris are actually coming to Iowa. Ottumwa Iowa, to be exact, home of Radar O'Reilly. This is maybe a 3 hour drive for me.

Now I'm going to go, almost certainly, just to see Paul Johnson live and in the flesh. But what can I expect? Do these guys rock? Who else is in the band? Jim Fuller? Any other original-non-original-Surfaris? Is Ron Eglit still playing with them? Do they actually play any Surfari's songs besides Wipeout? Scatter Shield? Or is it just the greatest hits of surf?

I recently came across this live video of them doing "Jack The Ripper" in Germany, shot October last year.

"2005 has been a year of tremendous change for the Surfaris band.
Original member Jim Pash (guitar & sax) passed away in early March after struggling with complications arising from heart failure. He had led this band from the time it reformed in 1981 through the time I joined (around 1990) and on to recent times as it developed into the very tight unit that it remains today."

"We are very fortunate to have enlisted Dick Dale’s former bassist Ron Eglit (who is also a first-rate surf guitarist) to fill the breach. He and I now share lead and rhythm duties for the band, alongside original member Jim Fuller (co-writer and lead guitarist on the band’s 1963 million-seller, “Wipeout”). Ron’s dynamic energy and unique personal style have been a powerful catalyst for change; as a result, this is already quite a different band than it was before, which has opened to us a number of new and different doors of opportunity."

"As soon as Ron joined, things began to pop. Our initial gigs signaled that the fiery chemistry within the new lineup was going over quite well with fans. And now, even at this early stage of the game, we have managed to parlay this into a new CD (described below), a new website
( surfariswipeout.com — go there for much more about the band ), AND a full-on European tour (from which we have just returned; more about THIS below, too)!"

"We look forward to an opportunity to demonstrate “the new Surfaris” to you in person! Keep your eye on the calendar to see when we’re coming to your town…"

The Surfaris website:

The Surfaris lineup: Jim Fuller, Paul Johnson, Rob Watson, Jay Trax, Dave Raven, Ron Eglit.

Yeah I found all that too, just hoping to hear from those that have actually seen this lineup in action.

Brian,
definetly go it's a once in a lifetime chance for you.
Your not going to see a Slacktone/Nebulas/Surfcoasters/or Maderia
performance, but it'll be a good show. They can do upto 4 or 5 Surfaris tunes sometimes. But pretty much a best of Surf type of show.
Paul is great to see live, and Ron really adds alot of new energy to the band.
I am probably gonna go see them this sunday at a Car show in North O.C. and I saw them at the Pier a few weeks back.
Surely better than sitting home, and watching tv.

please give us your thougts after you see them.

Iowa is in for a treat. This is worth the 3 hour drive. Go to www.surfariswipeout.com. There are links to music & video at the bottom of the page. Jim Pash who is in the video & has since passed away has been replaced by Ron Eglit who is outstanding on the guitar. These guys may be getting up there in the years but the quality of their playing is second to none. I saw these guys at the Huntington Beach Pier twice in the last 2 years. My only complaint was that I was only able to see them play for 3 hours. While they are not Slacktone, the are, in my opinion, the gold standard for traditional surf instro music.

Hi Brian,
I just played with those guys last Friday in Santa Barbara, and they kicked @ss! Very Happy They did a little of everything: Wipe Out, Surfer Joe, etc, but then they let each member do their "hits": MrMoto (Paul), Miserlou (Ron) and even a nice lighthearted rendition of "Summertime Blues/Somethin' Else" with Jim Fuller slinging out the vocals. Cool
The highlight for me was "Baja"...Paul was SMOKIN" on that one!

You'll have an absolute blast, I guarantee! Post a review after you see them. Cool

I saw them in Vegas when the Ghastly Ones and Swank Bastards opened for them and it was an awesome show. However, when I saw them at the beach recently, I was disappointed with all the singing tunes. They are a fun band and great musicians (I'm a Paul Johnson fan), but they lose me with the golden oldies.

Did you get any photos Guy? I'm sorry I could not be there.

Guy is a real trooper for making that drive.
