That just sounds plain wrong. Shocked
Seriously though, owning a dog is an achievement?
As in Married with Children, it takes time and attention that some are unwilling to give.

No no, not the Ramones....... I'd call this pretty active: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v245365QJBH8yPF —http://www.myspace.com/thepashuns Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery. |

making a living playing surf/instro music? Good luck. The fact that a band all has day jobs, married, kids and still gets up there and throws down is just pure punk rock to me. I love it. —Ryan |

Kinda back to the topic of Looks, energy, and movement. That being said, it wouldn't hurt the older guys to move around more. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

Not yet, but I'm convinced it'll happen around 2035 when some young whipper-snapper puts one of the songs I wrote in the biggest movie of the year! Damn, I'll be too old to enjoy it then....
Hell yeah, if THIS is the dog:
Everybody that meets Freddie soon admits he's the best dog they've ever seen. The best-looking, too. Luxurious fur.... Warren, buddy, sorry, I stand behind my claim about Black Sabbath. As far as the Ramones, that was a much more active clip than the ones I saw, but I claim no expertise on the Ramones. Anyway, that's all nitpicking... Ivan —Ivan |

Nice try Ivan. I believed EVERYTHING you had posted to date......until the bit about your dog being the best dog.....Nah. The guard dog thing does have some merit though. My neighbors on three sides have been the victums of burglaries in past but fortunately, my house has not. I sincerly belive that when and if the bad guys (probably neighborhood teens) showed up at my back yard, (all the break-in were on the back of the houses), that they were "greeted by my cute little doggie, "Max." He is 50/50 Chow and German Shepard, who is half the size of a pony and weighs about 100lbs. Nobody get past Max. I had 13 pines taken down two years ago and several days later the stump grinder guy calls me here at the office, seems he can ease by and get started. Well, I told him about Max and he assured me that he loved and got along well with dogs. He showed up and got started. All was well until he got "too close to the house from Max's perspective." He called back and ask me to put Max in the basement the next day so he could finish the job. Max and I are GOOD buddies.......ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

This is all good info - but nobody has answered the original question - how do larger bands get paid? A flat rate? For an entire tour? part of the door? And while we're at it, How much does a band like Los Straitjackets get for a show? —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

There is nothing I enjoy more than going to see a show and the door guy says 100% of the cover goes to the band, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside! Paul |

Yup. I think the usual scenario for us was like this: Either myself or the booking agent we had for a number of years would get the word out and see what really good guarantee shows we could get on the weekends in each quadrant of the country. Mix in some festival type shows (mostly garage weekends back then) and then fill in the weekdays with surrounding cities (hopefully). Any chance to play at a college or university was a godsend. Sometimes you had to backtrack, especially on the East coast, but somehow we made it all end up back at home with as few nights off as possible. We always had some guarantee, even on Monday nights. Even if it was low, it was safer bet than a "cut of the door scenario". We'd also try to get parties over a low guarantee show. We also did a lot in-store appearances at record stores during the days, where we could play for under age kids and unsuspecting shoppers. We sold more merch that way and often got lunch and a six pack out of it. http://www.satanspilgrims.com |

thanks Zak and SPskins! Thats pretty much what I thought. Our band almost always does it flat rate, but I didn't know about national caliber acts. would you say a major percentage of your money was made on merchandise ? —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

I would say all in all, when a tour was over, we made more in merch. We always tried to, and still do when we play. Especially when you have a low guarantee night ($1-200) it would make a big difference when you could double or triple that in merch. Lately when we've been doing these (semi)annual reunion shows, we've done really well with old fans who have worn out or lost items combined with new fans (esp in the Northwest). —http://www.satanspilgrims.com |

You guys are all missing the big money shows, forget your t-shirts and hot-dog vending stands. Now I'm not from a big surf act like Ted, but all the money I ever made playing surf shows, which wasn't much, came from private parties. We'd get $1000s for private corporation parties, community pool openings, and anything that made us feel totally uncomfortable infront of people in business clothes asking us why we didn't sing? Or my favorite, the portly office guys who play Stratocasters and want to talk to me about the Jaguar and how I'd improve my sound if I only had a custom shop SRV Strat and a Mesa Boogie amp. Ohh! I also liked the office hotties too! The best offer we got was for a Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

Did you play it? we played with an all lesbian band a few years ago - we made great money - it was a fun show. A friends wife that came was voted hottest lesbian by someone in the band that didn't know her. Plus, the crowd was fun to watch - with an all lesbian band comes an all lesbian and gay crowd with a few transsexuals thrown in. I wasn't expecting them. —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

Nah we didn't take it. But not because of the content. We were just asked about it a few days ago but we're pretty sloppy at this point. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

Golden moments! I've tried an SRV Strat. It felt like crap compared to any of my MIJ '62 Reissues. The neck was like a baseball bat, which I find odd considering his neck was supposed to` be a '62 stuck on a '59 body. I sure hope Stevie's actual guitar felt better than the copies. —Matt Crunk Founder: North Alabama Surf Alliance (NASA) |
