I'm just curious to see what everyone's playing out there as covers.
we switch our opening songs from Banzai Washout to Beat '65 on a regular basis, and lately we have been playing Stoked by the Beach Boys, Boss Barracuda, and ocassionally a blindfolded-dummer version of wipeout, and then Secret Surfin' Spot followed immediately by our own version of Miserlou. wow, we do a lot of Surfaris and DD tunes.
of course this is not all we can play, but that's what's been on our setlists lately.
we are also very close to adding Hotdoggen by the Lively Ones onto our set. i can't wait, i love that song.

Over the years in the Daytonas, we did vocals like "Surfin' Safari" (Beach Boys), "Surf Route 101" (Jan & Dean), several Bobby Fuller songs as well as Gary Usher stuff like "Hot Rod High" and "Honda Bike". Instros included "Mr. Eliminator" (Dick Dale), "The Cossack" (Jim Messina & The Jesters) and "Midnight Run" (Super Stocks) to name just a few.
In the Surfites we only do originals.

We used to do and will on occasion we will play Misirlou, Squad Car, Don't Worry Baby, and Pipeline. We don't really like to play them much anymore.

Come to think of it, we never did Pipeline although it's probably my favorite surf instro of all time.

The solo on Pipeline is one of my favorite solos in surf. Perhaps second only to Man or Astro-Man?'s Bermuda Triangle Shorts

Yep, thats part of the fun: Finding a few covers to play that not many bands do. If we need to play a longer gig (over an hour) we'll do The Unknown Surfer, (Davie Allen) Sukiyaki (not very obscure though), and a Moriconne tune or two (Guns Don't Argue). We're also recording a version of Istanbul with our own little arrangement tweaks.
Its good to have a few of the really well known covers on hand when you're playing a private party or something and and they're into the classics. It stokes them out. Although wipeout is only reserved for inebriated lawdetes dieing to dance to anything, and I mean anything, even remotely familiar sounding.

It depends on WERE we play. If its a show infront of a crowd there to see surf music or a show w/ another surf band we'll play covers like Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here", Radiohead "Creep", NOFX "Together on the Sand" (all instrumental of course) but if its a small bar on the Oregon Coast we can't get through a show w/o people crying for Pipeline, Peter Gunn, Miserlou, Wipe Out, ect. ect. We believe in playing for the crowd so we play the best known classics on those nights.

Oh yeah,
My favorite surf song to cover at a show is Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet's "Having an Average Weekend" from Kids in the Hall. People always get a kick out of hearing that one.

.............If there's one thing that really turns me off, it's seeing bands play "the hits" (yeah Miserlou and Penetration and Pipline are all cool songs but do you really need to hear another band covering them??) - there are so many great obscure tunes out there that don't get covered constantly...

I try to play originals as much as possible, mixed with unknown copies, most people can't tell the differance, then throw in instros of Deep Purple "Lazy" or "Hocus Pocus" by Focus, for laughs. We also do a blind drummer, Davie Allen tune "Into the Darkness".

While we're mostly focused on developing our originals, that takes awhile as the arrangements don't yet exist (duh). In the meantime, as gigs come up, we've filled out our set with some covers. We try to do tunes we don't see the other bands in the area (Connecticut - 3 other surf bands that I know about) do. When they're not surf tunes to begin with, we surf 'em up:

Mona My Love - Wild Bill & the Blue Denims
Toestubber - Ben Vaughn
I Feel Fine - the Beatles (instrumental, of course)
Hawaiian War Chant - (distilled from many versions out there)

we have some classics and some unknowns, and we have both heavier stuff and mellow stuff - so we can adjust the set according to what kinda show it is. I dont have to hear yet another Miserlou or pipeline either, but I 'll gladly play it if I expect it's the only song that will get recognized by most of the audience.
hard part with a wtf-is-surf?-audience is getting them to realize it's gonna be instrumental and they should start listening to the music as opposed to wait for the singer to arrive. Playing miserlou often gets an "oh, is it gonna be that kind of music" response and it helps to make them start liking it. my experience, fwiw.
we do play some 2nd and 3th wave stuff as well, amongst which a bitchin' version of Red Hot Navigator which always gets good response. RHN was quite a hit in the netherlands, and is currently used as themesong for a carshow on national TV so it gets recognized as well.

I don't even bother to learn to play the hits (I know I should, but it doesn't really appeal to me). In my current band we mosly cover Moment of Truth, Time Bomb, Another Day Another Man, and we do a Medley of Left Arm of Buddah-Taboo-Hava Nagila. I have ideas for many covers, most of them obscure or unknown, but nothing usualy comes out of it, as I have to literaly figure out all the parts of all the instruments, and painfuly teach every band member what their part is, instead of just telling them to listen to the tune and figure out their part (they way I think it should be).
I really don't like it when bands cover the cliches, but I understand some situations call for it. A lot of times, if that's the situation, I'm out of there...

Unless your audience is comprised of SG101ers, they probably seldom hear Pipeline, Baja or Mr. Moto. Those songs usually get an enthusiastic response and that makes them more fun to play. My favorite is when I'm playing solo using a drum/bass machine and someone asks for Wipeout.

We ended up doing a bunch of covers. Out of necessity I suppose. It is easy to remember them if you don't have a 4 track going for originals.
The only reason we ever did pipeline is we had some time left in the set.
When you play bars you tend to have free reign. We played a corporate event and we played pipeline. There is always the one or two drunk older guys that rush the stage and say the can sing La Bamba with you. Even though there were no vocals in the set.
We've done stuff by newer bands and classic bands. We did an obscuro from the Sandals that was in Endless Summer but not on the Album.

Really don't see to many people doing Phantom Surfers covers ha ha.
We would like to do more originals but it is hard to get everyone together.
Unless you have lots of time to practice its hard to come up with good originals. British Invasion killed a lot of bands off so you don't see too many bands doing instro covers of that stuff. It's like handing the gun to an assasin.
