Shigeo Naka is coming to the US in November, unfortunately not as a member of the Surf Coasters but as lead guitarist for the group Puffy Ami Yumi. I saw Puffy in 2000 and didn't know what to think at the time- the back up band looked like grizzled veterans of the Tokyo blues scene playing fairly nasty R&B, but Ami & Yumi are adorable young women singing in a pop style, so the contrast of the band and the singers was a really odd mix of two unrelated American genres- kind of like trying to mix oil and water on the basis that they are both liquids.
Since then, Puffy had a Cartoon Network show based on them which ran for two seasons, and I guess they continue to be popular in Japan.
Shigeo has been doing some fairly big gigs as a hired gun, keeping employed as a working guitarist, and the Puffy tour is great for him- but don't expect any surf licks!
Here are the show dates:
2007/11/11 Richards ON Richards (Vancouver)
2007/11/13 Overseas Japan Moore Theater (Seattle)
2007/11/15 Overseas Japan The Fillmore (San Francisco)
2007/11/16 Overseas Japan Key Club (West Hollywood)
2007/11/18 Overseas Japan House of Blues (Anaheim)
FWIW, the Surf Coasters are doing a reunion show on 12/29 in Tokyo, if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

Good for him. Bad for us.

is there any of their tunes on a web site or Myspace?
The House of Blues Anaheim is not a favorite place of mine, but if the tunes were good, and the price was right I might go,
But I highly doubt that I will like it.
but am interested to give it a listen.

Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi rules!
(Even though the anime show has very little to do with the actual Puffy Ami Yumi real-life band)

I have no idea - maybe he records with them. Ferenc mentioned something about him playing on some sessions with big-name (in Japan) artists. He could just be touring with them, though.

I took my young daughter to see Puffy when they were here in Portland 2 years ago. It was her first concert. They were better than I expected and remember that the band was pretty tight and had what appeared to be some very nice vintage gear.

I saw Puffy last night at Slim's in SF- the show was moved from the Fillmore, but Slim's was totally packed. It was odd to see and hear Shigeo playing a Les Paul standard through a Marshall half-stack, but what the heck, he totally got to rip it up. Of course the main focus of the show was on the girls, but he took full advantage of his solo spots and do the jaw dropping over/under fretboard work.
The Surf Coasters manager was here to see the show, so of course we talked about setting up a tour for next summer. But, it is really up to Shigeo and his work schedule. Puffy is one of the biggest bands in Japan and they tour constantly. He is finally making some good money as a musician after years of being broke playing surf music (yeah, same story on both sides of the ocean.)

No I don't know how much tix are... Try Houseofblues.com?
I have to say that I really enjoyed the show. Not my taste, but it is really high energy. Not sugary sweet at all, the backup band rocks hard, the drummer could pass for a Japanese Dusty- about 50 with bleached blonde hair- and he hits hard. The keys are more in the B3 world than synth. The second guitarist's Angus Young fixation bothered me, but at least that is a cool guy to rip off.

I just discovered this band.
http://www.myspace.com/theoranges4
I'm lovin' it.
Ted...
The ORANGES are my new favorite band! Any band that lists the Bay City Rollers as the biggest influence has got to rock!
Cheers,
Ted

I did that after I posted, duh on my part...
20 bucks.
he said he might go.
I will not be.
but I'll get a report form him if he does.
I'll have him take a surf coasters poster or cd and have Shigeo sign it.

Ferenc if you see him again, tell him hi from the site. I get tons of comments on the YouTube vids I posted and I am still smiling when I think of those two shows from their first US tour I caught.
Maybe we could get a shirt to him?

If I had gotten the SG101 shirt yesterday instead of today, I would have given him mine! But I won't see him again this trip, he is already in L.A.
I did all I could to persuade him to come back with the Surf Coasters. We'll see-- a decision will be made in January.
Thanks,
ferenc
