Permalink Favourite Surf Chords

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Hi All,
Not sure if this has been covered in the past and apologies if so, but I was interested to find out people's favourite chords to get that great surf sound.
If there unusual chords maybe tab would help people try them out.

Also have Surf Guitar members ever put audio files up and encouraged other members to contribute to them? and add other instruments or parts to the tune? maybe the person who puts the first part up gets veto powers so as to give the process some direction. A great way for collaboration? Would this work, Brian?

Finally I heard the Ventures doing a tune called Windy and Warm. I'm not sure if it was originally a Ventures or Chet Atkins tune. Does anyone know what Ventures album it was on and does anyone have the Tab?
Cheers

I'm not sure I've got a favorite chord, I guess I'm just a whore for any ol' minor chord. However, I'm currently pissed off at Bm for the difficulties it's been giving me in coming up with an enjoyable melody in that key. Evil

I'd love to collaborate with ANYBODY!! I'm really into the concept. Of course i want to work with decent tracks so i guess i'm "picky" about certain things sounding somewhat professional but i'd like to work with any of you. I can make a "riddim" for you to add to....or i can play on one of your "riddims". It's a GREAT concept......let's GO!
I'll be waiting,

PS; if we write a song together it has to be 50%/50% writers/publishing. I don't want to write a song with say, 10 guys!! cause how ya gonna split that? I'm a BMI writer but it doesn't matter who you're affiliated with. Make sense? Cool!

My favorite chord is the Neapolitan 6th.

I think i'll start a new thread about collaborating. It should have it's own title and space.

C minor.

<u>Warm and Windy. </u>
Composed by: John Loudermilk -_ Popularised by: Chet Atkins_

Can Be found here.
You need to down load the tab edit program, but you wont be sorry you did.

The Ventures album called 'Surfing' has their version of <u>Warn and Windy</u>.

Do you chicken Pick? That's how it is played, but I can get by with just single picking the song some times, but not always. It is a lot easier to play chicken picken style.

Joel

Thanks Joelman,
I'll follow those leads up. regarding chicken picken no I've not learnt how to do that yet. Another skill to work on.
I heard the Ventures Warm and Windy tune on the radio and have tried to follow it up through 2nd hand vinyl shops but no luck. Now I know what to look for. It's a great tune.

E-minor. Always E-minor.

C#minor is my favorite minor chord.

E Major barred at the fourth fret (shaped like a C) with the low E string open is my favorite favorite chord.

There is something about E that just feels like home.

Paul

I vote for Em, you can play it with 1 fingure!

Em7/add4th. Look Mom, no fingers!

I love 'open' G major with 4th finger holding down the D on the B string.

F# Minor. Don't really know why. It just has that Moriconne vibe to it.
Also, I don't know what type of chord this is, but I really dig playing a root minor chord shape and then adding in an extension on the G string three frets away from the root. It's a really cool spooky vibe Shocked

I'm not that overwhelmed by Em, but I have to say I'm a total sucker for the change from Cmaj to Em. That melts me every time. Anyone ever heard the song "The Green Flash" by the Concaves? That's pretty much half the song. It's fantastic.

"It's in D minor, its the saddest of all keys".

next lines from the movie quote please?

Really? I must need to go back and watch it again.

I thought Marty Deburggy says,
"thats a beautiful piece, what do you call it"

now whats the next line?

My favorite moment in that scene is where he calls the song influenced by Mozart and Bach - "kind of a Mach piece."

Back on topic, Em, definitely.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
