hey Big...they don,t use Tank Reverb.....

but eddie Angel de-tuning in similar form..his strings get a re-sonator form.... i was playing with his guiatr in Spain and he was playing with the mine...nd we tunning similar!!

Straijackets are posibility the best instrumental band..but isn,t totality surf music???

If you put too much isoul in get only the perfect reverb..you can loose the esciting form of the old gitar american style...
Sometimes..the reverb is too much dusty for he strings...( without reverb is more clean and understble
( entwndible..en Español)

A veces la reverb no te permite sacar todo el partido que necesitas a la guitarra ...si usas demasiada reverb pierdas las cremas de una buena guitarra bien interpretada..
I love and prefer with Tnak.....but i un derstund the other form!!!and RULE TOO..

LSJ are not pure surf, I'm sure we all agree on that. They are a combination of several styles which I find very creative. They play fender Vibrolux reverb amps so they are not completely dry but certainly not as wet with a tank. I watched them set up Saturday. It was pretty simple. They tour so much & play so many dates I'm sure lighter & simple is better for them.

You're right... Los Straitjackets are not pure surf. Their blend of surf, pop, Ventures, blues and rock helps keep the music more appealing to a wide variety of listeners. I actually like their simple but effective setup. The Vibrolux Reverbs sound great unmic'd or mic'd and easier to deal with than any of the Fender piggyback stuff. Even the drum kit is simple but effective for what they do. Since they do all their own setups and tear downs, they must appreciate the lighter, smaller and more easily handled equipment a lot.

What I like best about this band is that they are approachable. You can talk with them and get to know the individual behind the mask. My wife and I have gotten to know Eddie Angel since he lives in Nashville and he is just the greatest guy. I think the truly great guitarists are also the most humble about their talent, and Eddie is one of the truly great guitarists. He is so modest about his gift, it just blows me away. All the guys in Los Straitjackets are like that... humble about their individual talents. But dang, they can sure play some awesome music!!

I agree with everything you said about LSJ. After the show, 3 of them even went tot he Purple Orchid to see the Glasgow Tiki Shakers play. I've seen Senor Pedro Curry at a number of so Cal surf show. Before they headed out to the Purple Orchid, they hung out & chatted. Very down to earth.

My wife and I were at the Purple Orchid when Eddie, Pete and Jason walked in. Just a great bunch of guys!! While we didn't get a chance to talk with them a lot, we did get the chance to meet Joyce and Bill with the Glasgow Tiki Shakers. They are a super couple and put on such a good show. We really enjoyed ourselves. We were with Clint Beachwood and his wife so we didn't get to hear the Verbtones... sure hated that but Clint had to get back to San Diego.

Just another testimony to the nature of the great folks who play surf music.

I had the pleasure of a lengthy chat with Mrs. Pete Curry. A lovely & classy lady.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Curry this past Sunday and you're right, she is a very classy and wonderful lady. My wife, Martha, had a blast chatting with her. We met Eddie Angel's wife a few years ago and found her to be equally classy and pleasant.

Ain't instrumental music and the people who play it, great!!

I have never had the chance to see these guys live, but if they get close to me , I'm there. I even bought me a mask to wear when the occasion arises. If you look at the videos on Youtube, one thing about LSJ really sticks out......these guys are not above playing ANYWHERE!! 10,000 seat arena...no problem. County fair...no problem. Behind the garage in your back yard...no problem. Move a couple of picnic tables in a city park...no problem.

If you pay them, they will come. They play well over 100 dates a year so they obviously don't mind working.

I've been to see them play in some crap venues, I've been to see them play in some great venues and I've been to see them play in a backyard. They love to play together and it doesn't matter where. Now that is commitment to the music!!

I'll jump in too... I agree LSJ are not pure trad surf, but closer to something like the Ventures or just plain rock'n'roll-- and as a long time Mexico-phile myself, I get a real kick out of the Mexican shtick

they certainly appreciate their fans, and seem like very decent people and hard working musicians who deserve the accolades (too few, in my opinion) and attention they receive

I also think that in general, most of the surf musicians I've met, both locally (and in the great SoCal scene I got a taste of this weekend) are pretty decent & easy to get along-- there's a lot of far less talented musicians with a whole lot more ego in some pretty silly genres of music

Mario, if that's you... I really enjoyed meeting you and your wife this past weekend. Dang, I never thought an attorney could be as cool as you!! Now, Martha and I have to come hear The Eradicators play.

Ron,

Let's just say I am a close confidant (in the Clark Kent style) of one of the best lawyers in Canada, as well as certain musically inclined characters who play instrumental rock'n'roll

It was great to meet you and Martha this weekend, along with a whole host of others too numerous to mention all by name! And you're certainly welcome to visit TO anytime! There's Eradicators shows this week and next, if you're in the neighbourhood...

Well Clark Laughing ...

It was really was awesome to get to meet you (and as you said, many others too) but I sure wish there had been more time. I would have loved to pick your brain on guitars and equipment for a while.

Not to get off the thread here but getting to know you just re-enforces what's been said about how great the musicians are in surf music. Very approachable and just nice people (is this where I throw in the "eh"?).

Since I'm traveling to Connecticut this weekend, I won't be able to make your upcoming shows, but please keep me posted.

All the best..
