I have a ? for Jaguar players, I have heard this myth that Jaguar pickups have a lack of sustain because of the claws???
I don't notice it?? any thoughts?

My Jaguar has a lot less sustain than my old Strat or my custom Jazzmaster. Can't say if that has anything to do with my pickups, tho. I tend to think it has more to do with the bridge, the tremelo, and the fact that I use a BuzzStop. My custom Jag has a Strat-style tremelo, and sustain for days. I suppose the best way to "test" the theory would be to put Jag pickups in a Strat and see if it sustains as long as the Strat with its original pickups.

Of course, the rapid decay is part of the Jaguar signature sound...

Kyle I wouldn't worry about changing the pickups for more sustain. The short scale, the bridge, and the neck angle are what really make the Jaguar for it's loss of sustain. Play your Jaguar unplugged and then play your Stratocaster unplugged.

The Jaguar has a lot of handicaps, but if you know them I think they still make great guitars. A non-surf related topic, I've been trying to practice my fingerstlye rockabilly/country guitar. I don't have a Telecaster anymore and my Gretsch needs work. So I've been playing the Jaguar. It doesn't work so great for the light string bending stuff that James Burton did, and I almost put it down and tried a different guitar. But with the heavy flats, shorter scale, and trem unit I can do some more Cliff Gallup inspired runs. Moral of the story sometimes there's a place for every guitar.

Killer feedback guys! hhhmmm yes! I'll test my Jag next to the strat.

Hey Bill Johnny Fortune rockabilly/chet, picks on a Jaguar and a Gretsch
I use my Jaguar for rockabilly and it rocks man! it has that tele twang and the jag trem is almost like a bigsby too a 1 spring action

off the topic as well when I was looking around the net for the sustain deal
I came across this review on CIJ pickups I foung this funny LOL

Reason for pickup change: The original japanese made pickups were thin sounding and obscenely microphonic: they would react to any amount of gain by squealing like horny pigs. Since fender made vintage reissue jaguar pickups have been in "intergalactic back order" for many moons now, I decided to give Mr. Novak a try.

Any feedback on Curtis Novak custom pickups for Jaguar??

Good thread Dice.

my only complaint with my AV RI Jag is the lack of sustain. However, I have been playin les pauls, and other quality humbucking guitars for many years, that are know for killer sustain. This has been my bench for comparison.

I have yet to have a pro set-up, but i heard this can help. There are also plenty of mods out there for jaguars, not that i am willing to do at this time. But I am would love to hear feedback from others on this topic.

Naw, the claws got nothing to do with it...they are supposed to "shape" the magnetic field...but the skeptic in me just says they are another gadget on the gadget-laden Jaguar.

Jags aren't supposed to have a lot of sustain. The whole bridge design is wrong for sustain. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Very Happy

I did that and it gives as much sustain as a decent set of strat pups. so, 'what everybody else said' ...
