thanks Outsides, cool article,

you should post it on the Mermen list too,
I think they would appreciate the Mermen references.

also I thought it was hilarious when they called
DD the "king of the surf guitar"

too funny.

Never mind, somebody already posted it there.

A city with PDM, Meshuggah, the Lava Rats, The Tomorrowmen, and the Barbary Coasters and they write about Crowsong? I'm sure they're great musicians and all, but all I see are Grateful Dead references... Oh well, San Fran strikes again.

Well, I decided to give it a chance and listen to the samples. Um. Surf? And it's not the old I'm close minded, I need to broaden my definition of surf thing. I don't hear any reverb and I hear lots of singing. Sounds like Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen. That's fine, but is surf really something to "cash in on" or identify with? Especially if you're not even playing it? This is weird to me.

This is weird to me.

It all made sense when they said that the bassist works for the SF Chronicle ... which happens to be the same publication the article appeared in.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

ah.
Oh and I should say it really isn't weird to me. Most papers usually miss the mark with articles like this.

I was hoping someone would notice this. That would be Joel Selvin "Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic". It's typical of him. But, I found it pretty unbelievable too.

Thank you San Francisco Comical.

Uggghh. I even like most of the things Selvin writes but this is downright lazy.

Can all you out-of-state folks hear my smirk from here in SF?

~B~

I actually liked the song until about 3/4's in. Too much soloing for my tastes. Hey, as far as the bassist knowing Joel Selvin - guess what? That's how things work in this world. If I knew Joel Selvin don't you think I'd be bugging his ass to write an article? It's great that surf music is getting any ink at all. I'd like to meet this guy and bring him into the fold. Let him know there's a community here.

I listened to the three songs at the top and just noticed the link at the bottom. The one at the bottom of the page is a lot closer-there is reverb and it's instrumental. Are the three at the top the same band? Now I'm just confused.

Seems like this could be an opportunity to email Mr Joel Selvin and enlighten him. You'd be doing the community a favor. Smile

Ya know... Selvin was a major factor in the resurgence of Dick Dale. Before Pulp Fiction, Selvin dragged DD to San Francisco for shows (his first ever in S.F.) and hooked him up with Hightone.

Done. I thanked him for the exposure and gave him a list of other SF Bay Area surf bands as well as telling him about the Hotel Utah show coming up. I received a quick response from Mr. Selvin:

Always glad to hear surf music news. Check the production credits on your copy of Dick Dale's "Tribal Thunder."

That reminded me to check out my copy of Tribal Thunder (Hightone Records) and whaddya know...Selvin is listed as one of the 3 producers.

Jim Thomas on the Mermenlist
The article doesn't mention Dick becaause the piece was exclusively about Randy Clark. Joel Selvin co/produced Dick Dale's TRIBAL THUNDER and Joel was the force that made that recording happen - It came out in 93 and fueled Dale's revival. Miserlou, in Pulp Fiction, came on TRIBAL THUNDER's heel's in 94.
Joel is a friend of Dick Dale and loves Dick's music - that is a given. He knows that in the "surf guitar" realm - Dick IS the man, THE one and only "King of the Surf Guitar." Joel doesn't need to write any more about him right now...

Joel saw fit it was about time to write about Randy Clark - a new( new to some anyway) and impressive local San Francisco talent who has labored in a kind of obscurity for too long. ( new to some anyway) Randy is a monster of a guitar player - a master musician fluid in many styles of
guitar playing.-( He also played the Sarod on MERMEN's White Trash Raga-) It is good to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

Stan the Man at the show and he said that Dick at 70 years old still brings it..still kick's major guitar ass.

From reading Crowsong's website and myspace, it seems they use a few surf elements in a few songs, not really as a stylistic motif like the Mermen. Citing a major influence as Ornette Coleman, may give you a clue. I'd call this mostly a false alarm for surf fans, but interesting music for music fans in general.
