All,
I've just gotten word of some terrible news. Dave "Don't Fear The Reverb" Bruer was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend.
Dave was a HUGE supporter of surf music and ran the Father's Resource Center in Encinitas. He did a ton of work for the community in Encinitas. Both of my bands (Secret Samurai and Surf Report) are deeply indebted to Dave for his undying support and encouragement. He will be sorely missed.

Tony I dont think so,
but if you did it would have been at Adrien and Teds south bay surf stomp.
He used to book bands at the surf museum after Corvette Sandy, and
before my boss BOB.

He also did the yearly surf show (mutiple bands) at Moonlight Beach (Encinitas) in conjunction with the Menahune surf contest. (Fathers and kids surfing.)
quite the challenge to put together and I thank him for those.

Yeah, we had the pleasure of playing those gigs for quite a few years. Dave was always really appreciative of bands donating their time in support of the Father's Resource Center.

This is really sad news. Dave was great to us for the years he booked the HBISM. I will always remember his rants while the bands changed over at the Pier. He would talk straight through for the 15 minutes or so it took one band to get off and another band to set up, constantly peppering his soliloquy with his deep resonating baritone, "DON'T FEAR THE REVERB"

Linda found this online asked me to post it.
Here's one of the blogs about the accident:
Fathers' Advocate Dave Bruer Killed in Accident
September 25th, 2007
I've just learned via Dean Tong that Dave Bruer of the Fathers Resource
Center was killed Sunday in a motorcycle accident. Dave was a committed
advocate who helped many, many fathers with their custody and family
law
problems.
The newspaper article about this tragedy is below.
Motorcyclist killed in crash ID'd as advocate for fathers
North County Times, 9/24/07
VISTA -- A man killed Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash on Highway
78 was
identified by the county medical examiner's office today as the founder
of
the Fathers Resource Center, an Encinitas-based parenting organization.
David Cavan Bruer, 55, of Encinitas, was pronounced dead at the scene
near
Emerald Drive, an investigator for the office said.
Authorities said Bruer had been speeding when he tried to pass through
a
narrow gap in traffic and was clipped by a truck. He is survived by his
son,
John-David Bruer, the medical examiner's office reported.
Bruer began working as an advocate for fathers nearly 20 years ago. He
brought the Fathers Resource Center -- which formed to help fathers
with
issues such as paternity to domestic abuse, to custody and visitation
-- to
Encinitas in 1997.

Last time I saw Dave was at one of the recent HB Pier SHows. He looked fantastic. We chatted about the Labor Day Show at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas that he puts on and the old shows he would host (pre-Linda). He was in great spirits and was enjoying the music he dug so much.
We will all miss you Dave. "Don't Fear the Reverb" my friend.

After reading Ted's post I was thinking about watching and listening to Dave on Stage at the pier gigs or at the Museum parking lot, and I recalled that there was more to his quote.
He would say:
"Don't fear the Reverb" "Reverb is your friend"
amen to that brutha,
R.i.p. Dave.

A set rolls in
I pick my wave
It's the fourth
I like the shifting peak
It promises to set up the inside line where the speed is
It's hard to catch but I work into it until I feel the glide
And push and I'm up snapping across the face
Then off the bottom and trimming to the spot
Where the flying begins

This Surfin Sunday Sept 30th will be dedicated to Daddy Dave and all the many wonderful things he stood up for in this life, giving it everything he had and never asking for anything in return. He was a dear friend to us and our deceased son Scotty. He had an exceptionally big heart and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, friend, and say hi to Scotty for us.
John David may you find solace knowing your dad has many friends and is loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Love John & Linda
