Here's the setup... we've been organised to play a gig this Saturday night at a small tavern about 1/2 an hour from home for a friend.
No problem.  (this was about a month ago)
2 days ago we get this message -
Hurdle No:1 - "By the way, there is a theme for the party"....... oh yes??? ....... "um, it's country & western." 
Hurdle No:2 - The closest we get to country is Tequila sunrise... 
So, I imagine it's going to be something like the blues brothers at country Bob's BBQ bunker or whatever it was.
I'll get some pics if possible and give an update after the weekend, as this promises to be "interesting".

Do exactly the same as the Blues Brothers, except instead of Rawhide play Riders in the Sky over and over again.

Yeah, we can do Riders in the Sky, maybe we'll just keep changing keys until they wise up. 
Free Beer? as per usual thanks very much, at least I think it was free...
Chicken wire has been discussed by band members, maybe it's not such a bad idea

Here ya go...this was at the 2007 Clarkston Surf Fest, I was subbing for the Broken Spokes bass player who couldn't make it. And yes, we played surf music looking like that.

Way to go Woody, looking sharp.
We wear blue jeans and black shirts also while playing, the only thing missing is the hats.
As for learning anything new by Sat, that's not on, we have enough trouble remembering the stuff we're good at. However the suggestions are taken on board in case this ever comes up again.
I'm more the rhythm guy who sets it all up and lets the others go where ever they want, but first I have to lay the table and without that, they're lost.
The flashy stuff is for others, not me, I'd like to, but I got big fat plumbers fingers usually with cuts and bandaids on them...

Just a quick rundown on the gig.
The C & W thing wasn't a problem, they didn't care, "just play anything guys" was the word, which we duly did.
Went down pretty well seeing as how the crowd was roughly half our age and didn't know most of the songs, by all accounts they had a great time.
Only one moment where I thought we were in trouble was when this guy the size of a small building started twirling his friend above his head like a WWF wrestler in front of the band. It was near the end of the night and we kinda worked them up into a frenzy with some good old rocking numbers that had the whole place jumping.
Crowd estimated in the 150 - 200+ range, venue small, atmosphere great.

That's awesome! Sounds like it was a fun show.
We've played a theme party or two. Lucky for us it was with a burlesque troupe and they have a yearly event called the Tiki Tease. We played Hawaiian War Chant and dressed in our witch doctor getups and it went over great. We also played a show with some bands and the catch was that every band had to open with a tv theme song and end on a Johnny Cash tune. We opened with the Munsters theme and that was alright, but since we usually wear striped shirts we figured "I Got Stripes" would be an appropriate Cash song. We must have cursed ourselves as that was the first night we played in our matching bowling shirts. I Got Stripes sounded more like a trainwreck....we should have done Wreck of the Old '97 in that case!

People around these parts aren't real creative in regards to theme nights, maybe that's whats lacking with the scene, perhaps more theme nights and crazy costumes are required...
We still play the same tunes, just dress differently.

i've found it really helps with the entertainment value. Both the bands I play in do dress up differently for various shows.
One of my favouirtes is with The Robots is our security guard outfits which really freak some people out when a bunch of guards are just randomly in the bar. We also do a military theme, dress up like DD and The Deltones (barefoot and all), and our standard work shirts (greasy bastards from the local pump)
