Permalink Combo Organs-songs and sounds

Hey everybody, this is my second posting here at SG101, altho I read thru these forums almost everyday...mostly for all the vintage Fender amp talk...
Your help with my first post steered me in the right direction and now I've been enjoying my 65 Excellent Mosrite thanks to you all.
I recently bought a Farfisa Compact for my band (60's garage rock, surf) and now after 5 weeks and no organ it looks like I've been scammed. Assuming I can recover my $$$, I'd like to get a re-issue tank and with the leftover $$$ ($300-400.00) pickup a cheaper combo organ. Problem is that while I'm familiar with the sounds of the Farfisas, I really don't know what a lot of the other kinds of organs sound like. If any of you have links to your bands with tunes featuring other kinds of combo organs (Vox Jaguar - Continentals are way out of my price range, Farfisa Mini Compact, Cordovox, Whitehall, Unicord, Panther, etc.) that I could check out that would be great. Maybe describe the organ type and which song it's on, or even the tabs if you know that much....
Thanks!

On Danny Snyder's recommendation, I bought the Voce DMI-64 MkII. I got mine for about a hundred bucks on eBay. I think it is fine for live use. For the mechanical reliability alone, it is worth owning, IMO. The sounds are pretty good, at any rate. Not exactly like a Farfisa Compact or Vox Continental (what the presets are modeled after) but close. The Hammond B-3 sounds are terrible emulations of that one but are actually usable as some sort of mystery cheese-tone organ.

I used my Farfisa Mini Compact through a Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere Leslie simulator and a CMI Sabre Reverb on the 'Verbs new CD. Our Myspace page has a couple tracks that feature that sound pretty heavily. I generally had the 16 and 8 tabs "On" in addition to all three tone switches and the Tone Booster "Off." Good luck, that's a real bummer that your Farfisa has not arrived.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Myself and another eBayer who was scammed by the same guy are working together with the Police to get this guy.
I'm going to check out red Farfisa Compact locally today, and then next week I'll be checking out a Vox Jaguar, so I'll see which fits my band better. The guy is asking almost double for the Farfisa, so if I go with the Vox Jag I can also get the reverb tank I've been wanting (recently got married so it's one toy at a time anymore...). My band does maybe 25% surf and 75% garage rock, so the tank hasn't been essential yet. I had a Digiverb that I sold cuz it was unbelievably noisy.
Mike, thanks for the heads up on your tunes and the tab info, I'll check em out.

I'm in Mike's band. The Farfisa we used on the album went into the shop pretty much right after we recorded and it wasn't until a week or two ago that he got it back. In the time where the Farfisa was "away at camp" Mike used a Vox Jaguar. I'm sure he will give the thumbs up on those organs. I thought it sounded great.

the vox's are much easyer to repair, and allso i think they sound much more surfy than the farfisa, right now i have 5 old combo organ which i've collected over the years i have a tiesco, a white hall, acetone. a doric combo which is very cool a kinda soup up vox made by the same company as vox.and a farfisa mini compact which allways has a mess of problems i got rid of it and got a panther combo instead, my "fav is the doric combo a very cool sounding combo organ".
if i was you i would go with the vox, they are all so a lot more lighter than the farfisa and cheaper to.the thing about these old combo organ is they all have a different sound and allways need to be tune up befor a gig "the vox is the easyest to tune up"which when you're in a tight pinch is very important thing.
"combo organs",there is nothing like them around today and the new keyboard don't even come close to what they sound like, good luck with it surforever

So I've had a chance to check out both the Farfisa Compact and the Vox Jag. After doing this I'm even more confused! The Farfisa is in great shape, almost mint and has basically zero issues. The guy wants $750 for the Compact. The Vox is a bit rough as there are several keys that aren't working and are out of tune, and it's been recovered in a cool looking black and white checkered cloth...not original but still "retro looking." A couple cracked keys as well. He wants $350 for the Vox. I was totally suprised by how good the Vox sounded, despite it's problems, awesome cheese coming out of both, esp. the Vox. It just seems the Farfisa will be more versital for the garage rock and surf.
I'm thinkin' I'll go with the Farfisa as I'll probably spend the difference in time/frustration/money getting the Vox gig-ready. I'm trying to convince some friends to buy the Vox so I can save up and buy it from them eventually.
Thanks for all your help guys, and Mike and Jake-thanks for the heads up on your tunes, it helped and they sound great.
It tough cuz they both sound sooo good.

So I realize it's SurfGuitar101, so I'll try to make this my final question on the subject.....
While I was (and am) prepared to pick up the aforementioned red Farfisa Compact, I was just offered a chance at a recently serviced Farfisa Mini Compact (that's all I know condition-wise at this point) for $400, so here goes.....
What are the tonal differences between the Mini and regular Compact? One of the reasons I chose the Farfisa Compact over the Vox Jag is cuz of the Farfisas ability to get more sounds (more tabs) The real problem I've got is that I can't go down to the local music store and try them out side by side. Any recommendations between the two?
Thanks

Check out combo organ heaven for all your Farfisa needs. I currently have a compact deluxe and prefer it to the Vox - more square wavey.

What about a Rhodes through a tank. I did such a thing the other day as an experiment and it sounded pretty cool, but i'm not much of a keys player.

I thought this thread could use a pic of some of the combo organs mentioned.
Thats me with a Farfisa Compact, and Vox Jaguar, many moons ago.

Are the Z legs just dangling?

Thanks for asking. The z legs are all set up, and bolted, but I guess you could say they're dangling, by being on top of a PA cab. I suppose I could have gotten the leg extensions like Doug Ingle used on his Vox Wink Those two organs were not really stackable, together. I also liked the Baldwin combos, and Howard, a cheaper version made by Baldwin, but both are hard to find.
Oh, Tim, I have Cinema Surf, good cd!

The foto says MAY 72. Is this taken at 1972?????
And looks like you were a rock band, right? Cool pic though!

Thanks, Spy. Yes it was May of 1972. At the time, we played mostly hard rock, because as I recall, it wasn't cool to play surf music in 1972. I did still hang on to the combo organs, and my red 1965 Mosrite is just visible at bottom right.

wow! I didn't see the Mosrite! Everything in red! That's cool!

What are the tonal differences between the Mini and regular Compact?

A Mini has WAY less output than a Compact. A Compact also has many useful tone options compared to a Mini, and it also has more keys. If you play leads and want to cut through a band, a Compact is much more useful. A Mini sounds cool but I personally think a Compact is a much cooler sound.

I'm glad to read this! I went ahead a couple months back and bought a Red Compact I had found locally. I was thinkin' the Compact would have a lot more versatility and I'm glad to read your post Zak, just reaffirms it. I actually read your review of the mini compact on harmony central back then too, thanks again cuz that also helped. I had it tuned up and a couple caps replaced, and it sounds great!
Here are a couple pics of my Farfisa.
