Permalink No Messer Chups this time...

Drove to Ann Arbor a couple weeks back to see the Messer Chups at The Blind Pig.
They scanned our tickets, we had a drink, and then we casually checked The Messer Chups tour schedule while we waited, only to discover they'd been denied entry into the US and wouldn't be appearing!

No refund from Ticketweb either!

Anybody else bummed they won't be able to see them because of our...ahem...current "administration"?
To rub it in, Oleg posted on their FB page that they were told they were "nobodys" at the border before being denied entry.

Wondering how many other bands won't be coming to the US this summer?

This sucks, and I’m very concerned for what will happen to the 6 bands coming for SG101 fest.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Yeah they were actually coming to Des Moines Iowa. I saw that they had posted about Visa problems on April 30th.

Seems like 2 separate tours for them have been scraped

Jeff(bigtikidude)

It is tough for musicians to play the US. Even tougher, and less predictable now. Bring the Fest to Halifax,NS, Canada. The government is much more favourable to musicians and the process for getting a visa is simpler, and much less expensive… I know it can’t happen here. Fingers crossed for the other international artists.

They were supposed to be in Wichita last week. I'm glad I didn't go now. Smile

I had tickets to the Ann Arbor show and apparently I can't even get a refund.

I'm gonna be so dejected if they can't come back until orange fuhrer is gone. They're like my favorite band at the moment.

Like Jeff said, they also had Visa problems before, under the previous regime.

Heck I remember in what, 2008? several of us SG101'ers went to the Great Lakes Surf Battle in Toronto and the Candian border officials turned away Detroit's Amino Acids at the border. Ridiculous...! Duh

My understanding is that it is exceedingly easy for foreign (yes, USA is considered foreign) performers to gig in Canada but exceedingly difficult for non-Americans to perform in the U.S. There is no commentary here...it is simply what it is and it has nothing to do with the current administration. The visa requirements are strict and expensive to perform in the US. Head-scratcher for me, but what do I know?
If a non-Canadian band is stopped at the border, it is going to be about a fairly straight forward matter. But I am not here to cast doubt on why a specific band could not be granted entry...I will leave that to legal/immigration experts.

As I recall the Amino Acids didn't have any paperwork (why paperwork is needed to play a gig you'll barely get gas money back on is another question). But we are probably drifting into the "no politics" danger zone here. Smile

In any event, we all agree it sucks.

The mystery to me is that Messer Chups seems to come over to play in the US two or three times a year. So what happened this time that hadn't happened before? Confused

Patrick

Messer Chups were denied permission to play in the UK last year. They were able to come over a few years ago, though.

Los Fantasticos

I saw Oleg's msg about being denied. and locally here their gig with Electric Six kept popping up online with Messer Chups still attached - even though I knew they weren't.

Club event promotion is a pretty thankless task, so I'm not truly surprised that it didn't get updated, but thought it was weird.

It doesn’t surprise me that a band from Russia would be denied entry to the USA at this time, with Russia being involved in a war with the Ukraine.

I am surprised that some you are more mad at the current administration over your unverified perceived ideas, than the crooks at the events. Who took your money and left you without recourse to a refund. That’s just plane outright theft.

Thanks for support, Joel. I have nothing personal against Messer Chups and always was in good relationships with them, I understand their pain. But in general I find great the tendency to totally ban terrorist state that daily bombs civilians in Ukraine from worlds economic, cultural and sports life. So I see nothing surprising here, unfortunately. Surely sorry for those who lost tickets, that’s so awful…

Come on, you really think they got refused because our government cares about Ukraine?!? Seriously?

The Chups got refused by the US Consulate in Serbia. This isn't about politics, it's about incompetence. The band has played many times in the US, as recently as last summer. Mattias, the drummer got approved in Italy. There's no reason their status as a band couldn't have been easily verified with their own records, or even Google!

This administration loves putting people with no experience in head positions. This is just another result of that. They got turned down because the guy in charge of approving them changed since last time and the new one doesn't know what he's doing.

Just to be clear, I don't love or support either side, I'm frankly pretty sick of both sides screwing me. I'm just not going to dance around the subject of what happened here when anyone armed with actual facts and a functioning brain can see what went wrong.
