Still crazy about this band after all these years. I first saw them in 1985 or 1986 in Tampa, and I have an old rag of a t-shirt to prove it! Here's my Top 10 - ranked. What's yours?
1- Vaquita - a sublime, patient and mature song. Deeply moving.
2- Red Mesa - a badass drumbeat and the 3-way overlapping string runs.
3- Psychotronic - danceable surf beat with dueling guitars in the verses coming together in the choruses. Blueprint Insects.
4- Silver Coast - the atmospherics, the classic surf melody.
5- Flamin' Eddies Dragstrip - The twang, the garage rock chord changes. Primal rock'n'roll.
6- Black Sea - Another killer and ORIGINAL groove, with the tandem guitars singing back and forth.
7- Mojave - That open F#47 (the Alex Lifeson chord) and exotic scales.
8- Tethys - another lockstep rhythm section song with intertwined guitars and delicate trem picking, and I love the instrumental features in the stops.
9- Diamondback - a spaghetti western jam with a mesmerizing rhythm section lock down leaving lots of space for the legato guitars.
10- Polaris - This is their signature song, I think played at every gig ever. I ranked it #10 just because I've heard it so much, I have it memorized.
Just outside my Top 10- Tapping the Source, Pinto Pacer Duster Gremlin, Radar Road, Volcano Juice, etc...

It's funny you should post this, I just went on an Insect Surfers safari the last few days, listening to their catalog over and over. Such a great band.

You could ask me this question every day, and each day, it would probably be a different list. That said, on most days, Polaris, Orion Canyon, and Vaquita would make the list. I NEVER get tired of these guys! They could be on constant rotation for years, and, for me, it would never get old.
I categorize music into two categories: Artistic Music, and Fun Music. The Insect Surfers are one of the few bands that achieve the ultimate in artistry and in fun, at the same time. Few bands manage to achieve the ultimate level in ONE category. That I think that the Insects achieve this rarified feat is about the highest compliment I can offer. A+++++

My favorite band,
And not just because they were the first surf band I saw in 96.
Love to see them so much, I’m spoiled living in so cal.
I guesstimate having seen them at least 100 times.

One of my favorites and the list is great!
I had no chance of seeing them live but was lucky to meet David in Livorno and have some chats, laughs and dances together with him, what a great person!
