I just wanted to say that since I started taking lessons about a month and a half ago, I have drastically improved. My guitar instructor is Jimmy Dale, and he is a fantastic teacher.
The biggest improvement so far has been my timing, which has always been my weakness. I am also learning the “correct” way to play these songs that I have been playing for years.
Anyway, I just wanted to encourage anyone who is wanting to improve to take lessons, it makes a massive difference. Here is a short clip of me playing “The Wedge.”

Personal guitar lessons from a good teacher are drastically different from the best online courses or books.
I had some lessons with Martin Schmidt and it pushed me more forward than previous 10 years of practice.

I agree 100% with you. I have learned more from Jimmy in six weeks than I have learned on my own in the last six years! I’ve been playing guitar seriously since Oct of 2014 (after a long hiatus). I should have started taking lessons years ago!

Ive been thinking about lessons lately but i think it'd be hard to find the right instructor for me.
Ive played almost 25 years and am no beginner, but I could really use help with some specific stuff. My picking hand motion has always been horrible and as a result I have a hard time tremolo picking. I'd also just like to learn a bunch of general 50s and 60s lead guitar licks and turnarounds and stuff to increase my musical vocabulary. I was always into indie or proggy stuff growing up and never really learned the classics!

hit up Rick from the Volcanos. I don't know if he gives lessons, but he's a great guitarist in your area.

I know Ivan very well, I would say he's not a candidate for guitar teacher.

I'm not worthy, anyway!
I used to deliver stuff everyday to this place in the town he lives in... I was always on the lookout for him!

Ivsn’s a great player, but i suspect that he has bigger fish to fry. I’m a lot farther away from you than Ivan, and I don’t really teach anymore, in any event.
In terms of general suggestions, I’m going to use a word some people don’t like to hear, but learn your scales. I learned two octave Major and harmonic minor scales from the Johnny Smith Approach to Guitar and it made a huge difference. You also need to get your pentatonics down pat, because they come in very useful. Most intermediate students I taught that found themselves stuck in one place were helped by concentrating on technique and playing scales clean.
Beyond that, use the Amazing Slow Downer and copy, mpayimg special attention to copying not just the notes played, but also listening to the subtle hints of what fingerings the original artist used. There are multitude ways of playing the same pitches on a guitar, and if you can figure out the original artist’s fingerings, it makes life easier. YouTube helps with this, if you can find concert/TV clips of the original artist.

I live in Kingman Arizona, I'm not sure there are any guitar teachers here period, no less surf guitar teachers.
Might check if Jimmy Dale will do zoom lessons. Be cool taking some lessons from him just because who he is.
