Until recently, surf guitar has been a home based hobby. I’ve been writing, recording, and performing music for a couple decades, but surf, Hawaiian, and exotica was the music I liked to play at home in my basement tiki bar. It’s the stuff I love to collect on vinyl. However, my interest in vocal rock/pop has waned and I started to play surf as a means to improve my guitar playing. As it turned out, it was also a source of great inspiration for songwriting, and I now have an album of material demoed and awaiting a pro studio session this summer. I had been playing my ‘72 Fender Mustang and ‘73 Mustang Bass through built-in GarageBand effects, and then through my reissue ‘65 Fender Deluxe Reverb. However, now I’m looking to convert this project into a band that plays shows, tours, and plays festivals. The Mustang’s okay for surf, but it’s not quite the sound or look I want for stage or studio. Also, the reverb in the Deluxe isn’t as obnoxious as I would like it to be.
SO… today I ordered a full new set of pedals and a new guitar!
- Fender American Vintage II 1966 Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue
- Surfybear Reverb Compact Custom Deluxe V1.0
- Surfy Blossom Point
- Bigfoot FX Spaghetti Western Fuzz
- Bigfoot FX Magnavibe Vibrato
I also ordered a Surfy Stereomaker ABY switch, a BOSS Waza Craft TU-3w Chromatic Tuner, and an Acccutronics 4AB3C1B Reverb Pan to expand my Surfybear’s capabilities with a long pan reverb. For now, I’ll continue to play through my Deluxe until the right vintage amp reveals itself to me.
I’ve been researching everything for months, and perhaps this is all a bit mad, but I have no interest in fooling around. Drop me in the deep end and see if I can swim. Or… at least surf. Moving this from the basement to the stage has been a project a long time in the making. Tell me I’m mad if you must, but at least I’ll be mad with a big smile on my face. ;)

That’s a hell of a setup, 80% mine concert setup for many years)
The only difference is that I use headstock clip tuner and SurfyTrem with SurfyBear Classic. Plus delay pedal, and no vibrato.

That set up should suffice.

I upgraded my Surfybear Compact to a SB Classic, with a Surfy Drip Switch.
It's a major improvement in reverb sound control.

That’s a hell of a rig. The Surfy Bear Compact Deluxe and the Blossom Point are great tools, and I’m enthusiastic about the idea of using an external 17” pan with the Compact Deluxe. Surfy Industries solved a lot of problems and opens up a lot of possibilities by having two reverb levels and the ability to select between two pans.
I’m not certain if it will fit, but my idea would be to use a Temple Audio Duo pedalboard with a Compact Deluxe on top, and a 17” pan underneath. Adding Danny Snyder’s styrofoam hack to maximize drip on the long pan would make for one heck of a machine, while preserving the ability to use less drip, at the click of a switch.
That Deluxe Reverb can give you a lot of good sounds, and with the Blossom Point you will get much closer to the brown panel sound, without having to find an actual vintage Showman/Bandmaster.
No one can argue with the choice of that AVII Jazzmaster.

I debated between the two, but ultimately decided the compact deluxe has the option of an added external tank, so I went with that. I liked the idea of switching back and forth between the onboard tank and external. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Added a Seafoam Pedals “Lowtide” overdrive. I don’t use a lot of overdrive in surf, but once in a while a good transparent boost is handy.

I don’t think anyone will argue much with your choices. Can’t wait to hear what you’re working on!

Being you are going to Hog Wild, one thing I just bought which I never knew I was missing was a Strymon Volante pedal. Simulates a multiple echo head unit. I thought I was just happy with just A good reverb, but this thing is pretty cool and adds a lot. Mostly when trying to play The Shadows tunes. I probably should have just bought a Catalinbread Echorec being smaller, cheaper, and probably easier to use. But the Volante is pretty cool and I managed to squeeze it on my board.

I have been looking at the Catalinbread Echorec. Very, very cool pedal. I'll do a little research into the Strymon.

I have added my Bandcamp page to my profile and signature. These are just the home demos with GarageBand plug-ins and not with the fancy new rig, but that's coming soon enough. In the meantime, check them out and let me know what you think!

Some pretty darn cool songs, plus they were only $2.44 to download! It will be interesting to see how different the next batch of songs will sound when you do them with all the new toys.
Good job.

Thank you! Yeah, I didn't want to charge more than a Canadian buck per song for demos, but a few dollars here and there still help. Thanks for downloading them!
The studio session will have these redone with the new toys plus a handful more songs. I imagine they'll end up a little different with the live drummer and a producer involved, so the evolution will be fun to see.
