Is there a comprehensive list of all the surf music festivals? What's the best one you have been to? Best one you have played at?

I keep meaning to make a list
Off the top of my head, probably around 15.

It would be a great resource!

I know of these ones...

Jun 19-22: Surfer Joe Summer Festival - Livorno, Italy
Late July: Surf x Surfwest - Seattle, Washington
Aug 1-3: Surf Guitar 101 - Golden Sails Hotel, Long Beach, California
Mid-August: Hi-Tide Summer Holiday (not happening in 2025) - Ashbury Park
Late August: Rockaway Beach Surf Music Festival - New York, New York
End of August: Surf Music Festival - San Francisco, California

I think technically Twangstock is a surf festival too. May 3rd and 4th East Village, NYC.

Surf.The most dangerous of genres...

Surfcat

MARCH OF THE DEAD SURFERS! (2024) - Agent Octopus
THE JOURNEY HOME - Free download (2025) - Agent Octopus (Single)

BANDCAMP - Agent Octopus
YOUTUBE - Agent Octopus Surf
BANDCAMP - Reverb Galaxy

In addition to some of the ones mentioned

Surf x Surfwest already happened about a month ago in Austin, TX
Endless Surf Festival is going on as I type this in Brussels, Belgium
Surfer Joe in Livorno, IT
Southern Surf Stompfest in Atlanta
Surf-o-Rama in Valencia, though it's just as much a garage rock festival at this point
Wild O in Mexico supposedly had their last one in 2024
Primeiro Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe in Brazil (don't see anything announced for 2025)
Winter Surf Fest in Long Beach

And then you've got tiki festivals that feature surf bands like Hukilau and Tiki Oasis

I've been to SG101 (5x?), Surfer Joe (2x), Hi-Tide Summer Holiday (2x) and Southern Surf Stompfest. They've all been different, hard to choose a favorite (nor would I if I could).

After a 2 year hiatuss I'm working on Aloha Fest VI. Maybe end of the year or february next year.

And Endless Surf Festival in Sint Niklaas (not Brussels) was a blast yesterday! I'll upload some photo's this week!

Is Aloha Fest only for European bands, or do you sometimes get pond-hoppers?

I get it wrong every time. I think about South By Southwest.

He's probably talking about this one (last year's)

Rio Nido Roadhouse usually has one in July

Yes, exactly. I haven’t seen anything for this year yet.

Although the late August-early September surf concert at the Golden Gate Park band shell is called the Golden Gate Surf Fest, it has been a 3 band bill, each year.

The International surf Classic in San Jose, the weekend before SG101, typically has 5 or 6 top bands at the one-day event.

Both are wonderful events, but I don't consider either of these a "festival".

I produce a 30-band festival, aided by a board of directors and a fantastic team of volunteers, and it’s an insane amount of work. If one person is putting together a 3-6 band single day event every year, calling it a festival, and making it work well enough to continue doing it year after year - I’m not going to try and downgrade their efforts and say it’s not a real festival.

Besides, the purpose of this thread is to determine who is putting on annual surf music festivals or events that SG101 board members may wish to attend or perform at.

Paddy O Surfer, I applaud your efforts, and those of festival organizers, and concert organizers and promoters. I enthusiastically support and appreciate the two events that I mentioned (and so many more), and certainly in no way, mean to "downgrade" them. That said, I don't personally think that considering or labeling something as a festival, or not, as an upgrade, or a downgrade. My understanding, or misunderstanding (?) of what constitutes a festival is really the issue here. I would be interested of how others' define festivals.

Bob

I suppose it depends what else happens there. If there are vendors (food and/or artisans) and it’s a day event, then it’s more than just a concert in my eyes. Especially if there are other demonstrations or workshops or a visual art component or something. Festivals aren’t always just about the number of bands.

Paddy O Surfer,I agree. It has to be a special event: more than a concert. And the number of bands, is not necessarily definitive. A three band event, with vendors, workshops, etc. could be considered a festival. A 6 band event without vendors, etc. might not be considered a festival. That said, when the event spans multiple days, I consider it a festival, whether or not you have the other stuff going on, or not.
