Hey Paddy,
Welcome from a fellow Canadian surf musician. Nice to have some Northern representation! Feel free to share some demos if you wish. It’s always good to hear something new.

Just a thought about band/project names. Speaking as an Indigenous person (Kanienʼkehá꞉ka) I would steer clear of using an Indigenous name for your group, unless you are Indigenous, of course. We have had centuries of culture appropriation, and we like to our best to educate people on this (I do agree with you that we have cool languages). This post is not to be condemning, or nasty, just a friendly heads up.

I am sure you will come up with something cool. SG 101 is a great place…welcome aboard!

Hello Rev! Nice to meet you too. Where’s home?

I agree completely with your sentiments on Indigenous naming. I am a proud certified citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation, a citizen of the Métis Nation, and one of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada referred to in section 35 of the Constitution Act. I spell it out like that, not for you, but to dispel detractors and accusations of “pretendian” because I look very white. Even still, unless I was able to find the perfect Michif turn of phrase, surf music is not inherently part of Indigenous culture and I see no need to try and force a connection unless it comes naturally. A good name will present itself appropriately when the time comes.

Indeed, surf music and Indigenous Culture are quite separate, but we’ve had some powerhouses from our communities have a big impact on the genre; Link Wray, Nokie Edwards, Pat & Lolly Vegas. Plus we sure inspired a whack of surf song titles, for better or worse, lol

Looked at the photos of the festival you produce. What a beautiful area.

Good point about the Indigenous legends of surf!

And yes, Atlin is a stunning gem in northern BC. We basically consider it part of the Yukon because you can only get to it through the Yukon anyway, unless you fly in. I'm thrilled to have The Surfrajettes playing the festival this year!

Perhaps the Urban Surf Kings will play at the Atlin festival some day!
