My family is going to Japan pretty soon. We've got a fairly stacked itinerary, BUT does anyone know of any "really shouldn't miss" sites or sounds? cool guitar stores, record stores, etc. We'll be in Tokyo, Kyoto, Yamanashi....

Yes! In Tokyo get to the Ochanomizu exit on the maronuchi line - Walk across the bridge and it's 2 blocks of guitar stores. I ended up buying a 50's Heritage MIJ Tele brand new for ~$1000 vs. $1800 at Guitar Planet. Plenty of other great used stuff as well.

Outside of Tokyo, Osaka is fun and Dotonburi street food is where it's at. Take the Shinkansen to Himeji and do Himeji castle vs. Osaka castle.

Enjoy, and do itashememashite!

Thank you! I had heard there was a "guitar district"--sounds amazing. and mildly dangerous!
cheers,
Matt

-Following. I have a trip also planned for Tokyo and Osaka. Hoping to visit a few music shops too… and planning on bringing “just one more” home. Thanks for the question (and answers). Also, is there any place to check for live (surf/eleki) music? Thanks again Heiko

The Fender Flagship store would be on my list!

Safe travels, Matt! Japan's gonna be an awesome trip. Those guitar stores are gonna blow your mind. おたのしみに! (Enjoy!)

If I had to give only one recommendation, having been to Japan a dozen times with the band, I would do this if you can swing it. Mindbending:
