Permalink Microphonic Tank?

New Topic

Has anyone else had this problem, and what fixed it? The tank sounds brittle and shrill on all the high strings. None of the tubes sound microphonic when I tap on them. Tone is set on 6. Just put in $60 of custom rca cables. The SF Pro Reverb sounds fine without the tank. Before I give it to an amp repair shop that never works on these, and give them a hundred dollars to tell me that they found nothing wrong with it, has anyone had to solve this problem?

I can't play this thing! It's got no whammy bar!

The only trouble I have had with my reissue reverb unit is a bad power transformer.
I have had two experiences with microphonic amps.
The first is a 1964 Fender Princeton that had DC leakage from a defective cap. I found it by using a chopstick, then a voltage meter [DMM], poking around on the circuit board until I measured the stray DC voltage.
The second is a Marshall 2061X from 2008. I hear the microphonic ringing when I tap the circuit board with a chopstick but I haven't seen any stray DC on it. The ringing doesn't come through the speakers when playing so I'll just live with it.

I think I’d try a reverb pan of the same specifications, which is an easy, easy swap. I could, conceivably be microphonic, or some facsimile there of. Surfy Industries has some killer pans on the market, so you might look into one of those, as a replacement. Beyond that, the tube tap test should be fairly accurate, but if you have some spare tubes, or maybe can swap out some tubes from an amp with compatible tubes, that would be a way to double check.

I tried a different pan today, no difference. I put my original 6V6 tube back in, no difference. I ordered the other two tubes today, I'll try those.

Probably just a microphonic tube. Keep us posted.
