It goes without saying that the film Endless Summer had a huge influence on the shape of Surf culture. Bud Shank notwithstanding, we all know how wonderful, sweet and iconic the Sandals' ES theme song is. I don't know a single surf musician who doesn't have high respect for that piece of music. But I digress. While So Cal goes up in flames, Mike Hynson went to the great reef break in the sky. Whether he played music or not, I feel that he was part of the foundation of this raft we're floating on called surf music. Catch the next wave or strum your next chord for him.

Mike Hynson will be mentioned in this coming Friday’s Wave Notes…. Not to spoil it but let’s just say Mike Hynson was larger than a co-surf-star of Endless Summer…

Fantastic. Not spoiling anything for me. I fully agree about him being much larger than the ES credit. I'm just trying to reign it all into the SG101 context - a little bit. Where are you based? There's a San Diego event coming up that you might dig and might also be cool for your events listing. More on that soon.

Back in 1974 I was a 13yr old grom addicted to Surfer Magazine and surfing every chance I got. One day a new issue arrived and there was an article about Mike and the development of a new surfboard fin he called the "Dol-Fin" which was modeled after a dolphin's dorsal fin contour. He became a new hero of mine for his innovative designs and out of the box thinking.
I eventually worked my way backwards from there and discovered all his other accomplishments including his involvement on the endless summer movie. RIP Mike, you inspired a generation of young kooks like me!

Bernard, right on! We agree upon Mike Hynson and his place in surf history. Most just remember him for Endless Summer but truth is greater than than that for Mike Hynson. Unfortunately the younger generation of surfers (and other board sports like snowboarding, skateboarding, etc. don't look back to their founding history).... Wish I could make the SD winter surf fest, have had it up on my Events page for a while now... I'm landlocked in Denver, ColoRADo. Actually a cool spot for an old surfer to be stuck surfing the powder and standing river waves and every now and then making back to the ocean breaks... My knowledge of surf music is not all that great but I try to enjoy it every chance I get and try to promote it as well. Cheers, LBK

Remora1 - Damn ... what cool trivia/history. Not to mention that it was molded lexan. I wonder if that material is/was heavier than the fins being made at the time (primarily fiberglass I'm thinking).
LBK - Definitely a discussion ... I mean, hell, beach people and surfers most certainly are NOT paying too much attention to reverb-heavy instrumentals; haven't for some time and if an Endless Summer poster is on the wall in some bar or club - 99% chance the sound system has never logged a Sandals tune. But I was just noticing a few YT posts from this past December's swell that used trad surf music. It caught me off guard. Colorado? You got some killer mountains. I may be performing out there this summer but it'll be with a an instrumental band featuring a lot of reverb. ;)

Dang. Well, we all go sometime. I LOVE that he appears to have spent his entire life immersed in the waves and surfing. Saw this video of him about a year ago, truly moved by his still vibrant and feisty ways, sixty years past the best Documentary on ‘Sport’ of all time (IMHO, of course). Super honorable way to live in my book.
