Sant Anna Bay Coconuts – The Pineapple Parade LP/CD (Surf Cookie)

Sant Anna Bay Coconuts (SABC), a quartet from Antwerp, Belgium present their third LP (and third with Surf Cookie) which has all the makings of an excellent surf record. From the gear to their clever and coordinated outfits, SABC are a nod to the great bands from the days of yore. This album was inspired by their 2023 tour of California and southwestern references are replete. With one foot in California and the other in the old school, it’s not surprising to notice Latin influences in tracks like “Habanero Y Piña.”

Throughout the entirety of the album, you hear the benefit of a two-guitar band while the rhythm section plays an important and discernible role. This is seen in “E 4-Ever," the album’s second track which highlights the contribution of each instrument.

Two collaborations took place on this album. “Lyrics” to “High in the Mountains” were provided by The Bloat Floaters while The Strings Aflame from Mexico offered some words on “Egg Burrito No. 4.” Both are good tunes in their own right, but the collab adds to the magic.
Not ones to shy away from controversy, the Coconuts even tackle a delicious philosophical dilemma with “No Pizza on My Pineapple.” This track is not a Spaghetti Western per se, but it does sound like something you’d hear on the streets of Italy on a warm summer’s night with a cold limoncello in hand. “Whiskers Aflame” was named after a bad dream. It’s catchy and one of my favorites as the tempo changes keep the listener engaged and entertained. “Liquid Wall” is a banger! If ever a tune were a surf tune, this is it! The rapid picking and captivating dynamics are up there with the best of them.

There are two cover songs on this record, “Satanica Pandemonia” from a Tarantino film and “Tiki Polka” with a nod to Finland. They provide a unique flavor to the album by adding a surfed-out twist to previously existing tunes.

The LP is pressed on random color vinyl, has a 12 X 12 poster, and is limited to 300 copies. The CD is packaged in a four-panel gatefold cover with an M-slot and is also limited to 300 copies. A digital download is also available. Pick any of the three at: https://santannabaycoconuts.bandcamp.com or https://surfcookierecords.bandcamp.com
