Permalink Pedal suggestions for 50s style slap-back delay

New Topic

I'd like to hear your pedal suggestions for a 50s style slap-back delay. Basically clueless about delay pedals.

An MXR Carbon Copy is all-analog, affordable, and can do a convincing Sun-style slap-back.

Any analog delay set real short oughta work!

I have a MXR Carbon Copy and a TC Electronic Flashback both work really well. But I also have a Nocturne Mystery Brian and even though its more costly I personally like it a WHOLE LOT BETTER. Mostly if you play any Rockabilly along with Surf music. I never play the other 2 any longer, Highly recommend it.

The Nocturne Brain is one of the best, hands down.

Great suggestions here, as there is the capistan... and many others.
But, over 20 years ago I bought a Danelectro DanEcho. And boy, it had this organic slap back.. I loved it do much...you should consider it or check it out.

Cheers,
Wellens

For the daring... and lusty!

You no longer have to chase the vintage market for DM-2's in decent shape at a reasonable price, granted this recommendation has tamed that wild market pricing a little bit, I think.

This is a GREAT analog delay option and wonderful for the era and single repeat slapback you are looking for (and a lot more). Boss DM-2W Waza Craft edition. Also, having been out for a good several years now, also attainable on the used market in great condition and price.

Anybody try EHX's reissued Slap-back pedal?

Besides the Nocturne Mystery Brain, I forgot another delay I really like is the JHS Milkman. Kind of Lo fi but I personally think it does a really great slap back. Kind of all its made to do.

These are great recommendations here. In addition to those mentioned, the Keeley Memphis Sun is worth checking out. https://robertkeeley.com/product/memphis-sun-lo-fi-room-reverb-delay-double-tracker/

I use the Aqua-Puss (though I've been tempted by the Memphis Sun), but as folks have said just about any analog delay can do the trick. Keep the delay time short and the number of repeats to one (maybe two tops if the delay volume is low).

What everyone else said: for live stuff anything will do , really.
I hear digital delay working great too.

For recording I’d probably consider a boutique option ie Nocturne, Strymon etc unless you can use real tape

For 50's style? A tape delay at the end of the chain as any delay would have been in the studio, right?

As others have stated, a DM2w is a great option if you're not going for period correct, IMO.

Jumping on to second the notion on the milkman. Surf setting Cool too.

Gauss tape echo is good and cheap
Dunlop Echoplex is also good
But yes, actually you may do the same almost with any delay, especially analogue.

Anybody try the TC Electronic Echobrain? It's on sale cheap at MF right now, and I'm tempted to get one to try.

I own a TC Flashback and have owned an original Ibanez AD9 and the mini AD9 Analog delay. Also owned a Strymon El Capistan. All are great at slapback with no repeats, short delay and mix volume to taste. I have the Flashback on a smaller board.

Any analog delay will do fine, and the rolling off of the highs on the delayed sound actually helps it sit in the mix better.

Before the EHX slap back echo reissue there was the Dan Electro Fab Echo. Sounds great, does a great 50's slapback echo and also a cool almost reverb. No long U2 echo's on this little tool. Together with a Surfy Bear or an old tube reverb, it gives you that amazing surf sound. The only thing I don't like is the plastic housing (although it really tough to break it) and the odd shape that takes more space on my pedalboard that it should.
So nowadays I use an MXR Carbon Copy bright.

+1 for the Fab Echo. Very inexpensive and does the job.

I want to hear Caravan with a drum solo.
