I recently built and am now using an upstairs home recording studio. It has been great fun. The audio interface I am using is the UA 476P
I am mostly happy with it. The only drawback I am experiencing is the limited number (n=4) of mic inputs. The UA 476p also does not have a ADAT port. The ADAT port "seems" to be the preferred way to connect a separate preamp to an audio interface, thus expanding the number of mic inputs. One work around is simply using multiple UA volts connected to a single macbook. A friend and I did this recently and it worked ok (though it was a brief experiment). However, I am reading that this technique likely increases latency due to both Volt interfaces sending their workload to the macbook.
To get to the point I am asking opinions about solutions to the challenge of increasing mic inputs. Is it worth using two Volt 476ps or would it really be best to invest in an interface like the UA Apollo Twin X Duo. In the short term the Apollo DUO would be more $$$ to spend and less mic inputs than simply using two volt 476ps. I guess in the long term the Duo is a higher quality interface with a greater potential for expandability. I have also read that the Apollo Twin Duo does much of the processing itself and does not place this burden on your computer.
I hope this makes sense. I am still early on in the learning curve for such things. I appreciate any feedback.
