Permalink Surf music magazine?

New Topic

Does anyone know of a current print magazine dedicated to the surf music scene?

If not, why doesn't somebody start one?

If the rockabilly community can support a magazine(or two or three), I'm sure the surf community could too.

I think the rockabilly community is much larger than the surf scene.

Have you seen Double Crown's Continental Magazine? And from the UK is Pipeline Magazine.

I always liked the UK's New Gandy Dancer, which covers instrumental music. A surf-only mag would be cool.

A while back, I'd been kicking around the idea of a surf zine, but then I got into grad school, so my schedule sort of filled out.

I'd be happy to help if someone wanted to start one up.

Bill,
You did the right thing. Stay in school. Don't end up like me. Make us proud.

No longer in print but there was once a cool Swedish surf music zine called Surfers Rule.

I'd be interested enough to buy a surf music mag as I think 'surf' is about to go big over this side of the lake.

Maybe even contribute some stuff from here as well.

There is still nothing like printed paper... some sense of permanence to it. I get New Gandy Dancer, Pipeline and Continental, all of these are excellent, I wish the Continental came out as often as the other two.

Greatly missed: Point Break (KK???), Surfer's Rule, Bob Dalley's SMUSA (typos and all).

Banzai (Germany) still publishes. New Eleki Dynamica (Japan) is searching for a new publisher. Garage and Beat is only on the web. CosmikDebris is back on line after a year or so break. ReverbCentral has regular monthly for reviews.

I always think of that alternate universe where the Beatles never hit and surf music went on to become the defacto form of rock, and Roling Stone was actually called "Pipeline" and came out biweekly on glossy stock packed with stories and reverb reviews.

Well, I'll settle for The Continental...
Good luck to anybody who decides to create a new magazine- I'll subscribe.

Its a great idea, but there are a good number of rags out there (as Ferenc pointed out) - probably as much as the market can support. Rather than a surf only magazine, I think the magazines that are friendly to surf but also include other genres and cultural niches have a better chance of success, are more interesting to read and also may introduce surf style music to others that may not be aware of it. Also I would mention Rock and Roll Purgatory.

I thought about a fanzine too. My friends in Canada have one, but it's mostly rockabilly with some surf and garage.

Even though, like Bill, since going back to school I don't exactly have all the time in the world, I'd be up for doing something along the lines specified. Online would be much more practical than print. Unfortunately, in most cases print zines are not even close to cost-effective.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Well, I happen to have a background in commercial art and have been involved in startup publications before, as both publisher and art director. I could handle design and layout duties no problem, as well as some editorial work. But my problem is much like yours - a limited amount of time I could devote to such a project. I already run a full-time business that keeps me pretty busy.

The key would be getting the right people involved to handle necessary ad sales and quality editorial content. I wouldn't need (or expect) to make money off of it, but it would need to at least cover it's own expenses. That means selling advertising.

I'd be willing to give it a go if enough key people sign on. I may even do a little research on similar publications to see what kind of numbers are involved.

Thank you Ferenc, I loved doing Point Break. But time doesn’t allow something like that anymore. People can print out my blog http://kawentzmann.de/cgi-bin/weblog_basic/index.php. But be warned, there’s not too much Surf there…
