Hypersonic Secret – Project: Mayhem CD (Boneyard Records)

What can be accomplished with six songs in 20 minutes and 38 seconds? A good introduction, I’d say. While taking the sci-fi approach to surf music, there is plenty of vintage influence to be found.

The opener, “Flightline” starts the broadcast with a clever melody and then throws a nod to the classic, “Pipeline.” Similarly, “Afterburner” offers a 50s-inspired intro before taking a turn towards the metallic with an increase in tempo and a screeching guitar solo. “Mission Parameters” begins with a 60s rock vibe and then dives into a surfed-out ditty. The fourth track is 1981s, “Too Fast for Love.” It’s a fun one! “[Redacted]” is a peppy and surfy number that stands out as my favorite track. The exploration culminates at “95 Miles Above Earth;” a spaced-out tune that courses a variety of genres.

This recording is the brainchild of one, T. Wesley, and the songwriting shows his potential by avoiding the common pitfall of being tediously repetitive. One critique: I would have preferred more continuity than the use of multiple genres. There are 50 CDs in a gatefold sleeve. The 12” record is available on black and a super-limited clear vinyl. Just FYI ... my 2nd EP will be out before the end of 2024! I like to think it's got more in the way of traditional surf on it ... but it's still me, so there's stuff that isn't traditional surf on it as well.
