I know they aren't surf, but goddam I love these guys. Does anyone know what the guitar player's sound chain is? They are, of course, playing in town the one weekend I'm out of town. Ah well.
the other question is they seem to be getting really big, Khruangbin is really big, how can we parlay these "not surf, but kind of similar" instrumental bands into great success for all the surf bands?!

I say their sound isn’t so “not surf” to count them out. If people book them in conjunction with other instrumental guitar bands (“surf”) that’d be wicked!
I’ve noticed to some degree the most active touring surf acts aren’t overwhelmingly surfy themselves (except Surfer Joe!)

I came across La Lom when thier videos came up on Youtube after watching lots of videos by Twanguero (Diego Garcia), a Spanish virtuoso guitarist who has been around a while. If you like La Lom you will most likely also like Twanguero.

Thanks, Stormtiger. Hadn't heard Twanguero before, but now I'm digging it.

Those Hermanos had slipped my mind, I've watched their videos and really like them. Thanks for reminding me.

I’ve had them on repeat all summer along with Opez, which captures a lot of the same vibe with a slightly darker twist
Came here looking for the sound chain info too!
The tone reminds me a lot of the 5.6.7.8’s- and YouTube look the same- 1960’s beginner guitar piped into a fender reverb amp dialed to 11.
Commenting on this old post to link through to another discussion board that snapped a pic of the board from the show and details the minimalist sound chain- topanga reverb, boss delay and fulldrive3 into a dialed up fender deluxe reverb.

LA LOM is amazing. The best new music I've heard in years. It'paired down, tasteful and kind of non-virtuosic. But those guys are really really good players steeped in various Latin music traditions. It's an example of what instrumental electric guitar can be. I think the problem with a lot of "surf" stuff is that it gets bogged down by kitsch and imitation. LA LOM is more sophisticated than that. I wish the album was twice as long.

It is really funny that there's this sort of surf-adjacent thing bubbling up. The other night I went to a show and saw on the marquee that Glass Beams were playing in a few weeks... then right across the street Khruangbin were on the marquee for a huge venue. Even if I wouldn't call either band surf, it's pretty great to see that there's demand for instrumental guitar music, and I'd imagine some of that spills over, even if subtly.
I wish I had a name for it. I sorta call them Khruangbin-clones even if that's pretty reductive. But I think Khruangbin were the band that kicked the door down for the rest to succeed. Though in La Lom's case, Chicha Libre might have had some say too.

These guys are incredible! Gorgeous tone, I can't stop listening to them. Thank you for creating this thread, as I had never heard of them before.

I realize guitar is in the title of our forum but the drummer is the special sauce in this case. That guy is awesome!
