Permalink "In the Hall of the Mountain King" --earliest version?

New Topic

October is coming, and I'm filling in some holes in our spooky month repertoire. I realized that we don't have a good version of Hall of the Mountain King. I got curious about early surf/intrumental rock versions. I found a few: (not sure how to format this with videos in mid text!)

I Meteors
Nero and the Gladiators
The Avengers VI

So I'm wondering two things:
Is there an undisputed FIRST version done on electric guitar? Or did everyone have a good idea at the same time?

and if YOU perform it, how do you handle the arrangement? Follow the orchestra or base it on another band version? (Rainbow, with lyrics?!)

Lancasters (Richie Blackmore), "Satan's Holiday" from '65, I believe. The Surfrajettes also cover this. YouTube videos galore.

looking on discogs, Nero & Gladiators listed as 1961.

Yes, Nero & The Gladiators' version should be the first one.

We played this a handful of times back in 2005. One of those times got recorded. Although it's a bit rough, it is bombastic enough. We loosely based it on the Who's 1966 version

Here with hexaphonic fuzz combined with other effects including pitch shift. Intro and outro chilly sound effects from guitar synth. Variations on the melody were constructed to avoid excessive repetition.

By the time Pollo del Mar recorded it, there were hundred's of versions, so we went back to the original 1875 version for inspiration. We released in in 2003.
