Thanks for posting that. Having been born in Minnesota and having spent some time in iron country, I can really appreciate hearing about this. Face it, in those relatively isolated mining towns, you had to make your own fun, and music was a great pastime in the doldrums of a Minnesota winter. Of course, Virginia is only about 60 miles from the Surf Capital of Minnesota, the beach at Park Point, on the far west end of Superior. I’ve seen ‘em out there, surfin’ on Superior. Crazy! I hope that 80 Foot Wave has been digitized. I’d love to have a copy. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

I found another one, as well. All in all, it’s a decent little tune. Simple, but well performed and the recording quality isn’t bad, at all. Being from Virginia, MN isn’t going to generate much exposure for a band, but these guys weren’t bad. Here’s another tune they did. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

Thanks for posting this!!! I love The Vaqueros! The recent LP comp Surfin The Great Lakes (check it out if you haven't yet) has a few Vaqueros songs on it and they're all really good. I knew they were from MN, but didn't know they came from the range. Thats pretty interesting! That really is the last place I'd think of as having any surf culture. But apparently they did! When I first moved to MN from SoCal, I thought I would be moving to a Surf wasteland. I've been pleasantly surprised that it simply isn't the case. The scene is small, but its got some good folks (and bands) in it, and its got some great history. Also I have to check out more episodes of Minnesota Historia. Seems like a cool little show to learn more about my new home. Cheers! |

Having spent my early years in Rochester, I can state as a fact that we were aware of Surfing and loved Surf music. Many of us saw California as a sort of promised land, that we never expected to actually reach. When I’d see shows on TV that showed nice weather during the winter, I felt pretty left out. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

it’s funny, but when I was a child, I was sure that I lived in the backwater of all backwaters. My family left Minnesota when I was in my early teens, and moved to Denver, where the winters were much less harsh. Well, I still prefer a warmer climate than Minnesota, but with the perspective of years, I’ve come to realize that Rochester was a great place. But there wasn’t much reason to own a surfboard, there. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |
