I have had the good fortune to be friends with the creator of this documentary that chronicles the early days of Dick Metz's crazy odyssey from Laguna Beach to South Africa. His tales served to inspire Bruce Brown and the rest is history. Although you won't hear The Sandals, you will be blown away by this background story to what has become an iconic film and, well, I get about 15 seconds (if that) in the film ;)

- About the Film -

BIRTH OF THE ENDLESS SUMMER (USA, South Africa)
The train-jumping, steamship-hopping adventures of Dick Metz reveal the untold story behind one of the most watched and beloved documentaries of all time: Bruce Brown’s The Endless Summer.  Described by Alex Haro of The Inertia as "a beautiful film," and a "must-watch documentary," Birth of The Endless Summer follows Metz's 1959-1961 vagabond travels and captures him retracing the steps of his original journey as an energetic 91-year-old. The five-time award-winning film has captivated both surfers and non-surfers alike and continues to fill theaters in the US and across the globe. Dick Metz's remarkable story and pivotal friendships with Bruce Brown and Hobie Alter not only inspired what many consider the greatest surf film ever made but also paved the way for the sport of modern surfing as we know it.

NATIONAL BROADCASTS COMING SOON
The five-time award-winning documentary will roll out in the fall of 2024 to states nationwide on PBS, and broadcasts will continue through 2025 and 2026.  Please keep posted on dates and showtimes by following Birth of the Endless Summer on Instagram.
